Astro Boy on ABC3

ABC3 has a remake of the original 1960s hero by Tezuka Productions, produced in 2003.

Classic Japanese TV hero Astro Boy is coming to ABC3 next month.

This is a remake of the original 1960s hero by Tezuka Productions, produced in 2003.

There are 50 episodes in this series, set in the year 2043.

Wikipedia notes of the series, “many episodes of the series can be regarded as “free-standing” in as much as they do not have anything to do with the series major story arcs, the 2003 series can be regarded as having a well-defined beginning, middle and end. Although the series appears to initially have two main plotlines (Dr. Tenma’s eventual plans for Astro to evolve and another plotline about robot rights), these two story arcs dovetail toward the end of the series.”

In a series based on the classic anime series, Astro Boy is brought back to life at the retro-futuristic Metro City’s Ministry of Science by the kindly Dr. O’Shay. Years earlier, Dr. Tenma, O’Shay’s predecessor and a brilliant scientist in his own right, created Astro in the image of his late son, only to turn against him in his obsessive quest for absolute authority. Now living under O’Shay’s thoughtful tutelage, Astro is as resourceful as he is strong. Able to fly at supersonic speeds, he has a keen sense of justice tempered only by his more child-like tendencies. Whether battling the evil Dr. Tenma and his powerful android army, looking out for Zoran, the mischievous little sister that O’Shay created for him, or rehabilitating some wayward machines, Astro never wavers from his mission to achieve fairness and justice for both people and robots alike.

Episode 1: Power Up
Dr. O’Shay uses all of the city’s power to jolt Astro to life but this overloads the power system. When Magnamite crashes across the city like a huge mechanical octopus, Astro must master his amazing powers in order to save the city.

It begins 6:05am Wednesday November 3rd.

  1. I’m old enough to remember watching the original Astro Boy as a child in the mid-to-late ’60’s. Best cartoon series ever!! Talk about a blast from the past!

  2. @ Chris

Channel 10 was showing Avatar: The Last Airbender from the beginning prior to the start of the Commonwealth Games (Monday through Thursday). I hope they continue now the Commonwealth Games are over. I think they were about 3/4 of the way through the first season/scroll when the Commonwealth Games started.

  3. As big Astroboy fan I looked forward seeing whole series this time. I’m old enough to remember watching 1960’s & 80’s series when they first came out.
I would like to see some classic anime on ABC3 or even classic cartoons.

  4. The 2003 series on Astro Boy was shown on the ABC1 back in 2004, but the ABC never showed the second half of the series.

The ABC really needs some decent anime series for children, but this would be one of the worst choices. Since the English version completely butchered this excellent series. I recall watching the initial run on the ABC, and the scenes often wouldn’t even match, what the characters were actually talking about.

The English version changes the opening sequence, changes the closing sequence, changes the wonderful music, changes the characters personalities (especially Astro Boy), changes the scripts, deleted scenes and uses unsuitable voice actors (i.e. Astro Boy sounds too old). Basically Sony wanted to focus solely on the action, and ripped the heart out of this series.
