Timeshift snapshot

Drama still dominates the shows we are recording and watching later.

Some readers have been enquiring about results for Consolidated figures, an indication of what viewers have been timeshifting with PVRs.

Drama still dominates the results on a regular basis, and there are plenty of 9:30 shows that viewers are watching later.

Here are the top Time-Shifted Programmes for Week 40 (week beginning September 27). Shows are listed beginning with the biggest audience increase of 156,000 for the ‘Britney’ episode of Glee.

  1. @Jerome and anyone else – 30 seconds of searching on teh interwebs would have answered your Q’s. From the OzTAM website FAQ on time-shifting:

“Only standard speed (normal) playback is included in total viewing
figures (e.g. no ‘trick mode’, fast forward)”

@Craig(Buzz) – I haven’t checked with any advertisers but I’m betting that they are interested in knowing who’s watching their ads, whether live or a few days later won’t matter to them.

  2. David, obviously Secret Squirrel and I have read your recent article about OzTAM methodology. Can you confirm works same for timeshiftng? i.e. only counts when ads viewed at normal speed. I don’t reall if this was mentioned in your article.

I also agree this would be more interesting in % order, but this is probably the format it’s given to you in. I see Offspring is high (clashes with live F1, in House’s former time-slot). Ghost Whisperer and Tara would be high due to late-night time-slots. Gruen being on this list is surprising, given it gets repeated following night on ABC2.

  3. Exactly Jerome, the advertisers couldn’t care less about these figures. Why they are included in the ratings for the general public is beyond me.As i always say our rating system sucks.

  4. @Jerome – in order to be counted in the time-shifting figures by the OzTAM meter the program must be viewed at normal speed (and with the ads). Therefore both ratings are equally good. Whether you actually watch the ads is another matter, but it’s exactly the same for “live” programming.

  5. Perhaps Survivor and Ghost Whisper should be considered the highest, as they had the greatest % of time shifted viewers, all with around a 20% time shift increase.

  6. um, if a show has a high timeshift % it is considered a bad thing, not good.

timeshifted viewers are worthless to the network and if there are lots of people recording as opposed to watching live it means the show is not making its full potential. and a lot of the time it is because the viewer is waching another channel ie watching their ads and paying their bills, while viewers still get to watch the other show just without ny benefit to the network..

  7. It is interesting to see which shows do actually benefit from being recorded and viewed later.
Figures look better for some of the Aussie Dramas like Rush and Offspring which either get close to or crack the million people mark!
