Daryl Somers will make a documentary about GTV9’s studios as a way of capturing the glorious years at in Bendigo Street, Richmond.
Somers has been vocal campaigner for preserving the site’s history, including calling for a television museum to be established.
“I feel the baton falls to me to do something for the history of the place,” he said.
“There have been people who have been working here for such a long time behind the scenes and not necessarily in front of the camera. I feel we have to do something.”
Somers will join with other Nine celebrities for the TV special to air on November 27th, following the season final of Hey Hey it’s Saturday.
Lights, Camera Action: Television City Celebrates will be hosted by Bert Newton and Eddie McGuire.
The exterior of the site, originally the Wertheim Piano Factory in 1908, is Heritage listed, but the interior (including the studios) will make way for apartments.
In an interview with TV Tonight earlier this year, Somers recalled his 1971 audition for Ernie Carroll (Ossie Ostrich) and Cartoon Corner at GTV9.
“I and some others went to Channel Nine and we had to sit and wait in the canteen until we were called and I remember vividly walking down the corridor and into Studio One, which seemed like a mile away.
“I had to sit at a desk and there was an A4 sheet that said ‘Talk about Popeye, Bugs Bunny, bah, blah, do a Coke ad…’
“So I started taking off Mr. Magoo impressions and then when I did the Coke ad, it didn’t say how to sign off or anything, so I ended up throwing to an imaginary cartoon.
“When I walked out of the studio Ernie walked over and said, ‘Now look, that was quite good… if you were to be successful when would you be able to start?’ I said ‘Tomorrow.’”

@Dave wow i didnt know about that Alice was a good character
@DarthBish “Season final” does imply the last episode for the year, “Series final” would sound a little more, well, final.
Finally Daryl uses his powers for good instead of evil!
David,
one can’t help but notice that you used the phrase “season final of Hey hey” rather than ‘final ep’
Do you know something we don’t??
Darth it’s the final episode of the 2010 season. Hasn’t been renewed for 2011 yet.
Dan, also the beautiful Megan Williams died some years ago. Lovely idea though.
sounds very intresting but a really stupid time to put it on would be good if they reunited the cast of the sullivans but sadly they would be missing one Terry played by the late great Richard morgan
Well, at least Daryl’s doing something about it, good onya Daryl.
Brilliant idea – can’t wait to see it!
