New drama series for Seven

Network Seven is planning not one, but two new local dramas in 2011.

CEO David Leckie let slip on the news to the Australian Financial Review yesterday.

As we know, Winners and Losers is already in production. But he declined to provide any more details, except to say the other project was “fantastic.”

But TV Tonight has heard whisper of a new drama series in development in the industry. Could it be the same project?

One network is believed to be developing a new drama that centres around young lawyers, with the current title Crownies…..

Updated: Crownies is in development with ABC.

Whatever the new series for Seven turns out to be, it makes the future for City Homicide a lot clearer. Seven has said it will make a decision on that one early next year.

The newspaper also confirmed the following for 2011: Packed to the Rafters, Conviction Kitchen, The Amazing Race Australia, Sunday Night, Dancing with the Stars, Border Security, Australia’s Got Talent, My Kitchen Rules, Better Homes and Gardens and US shows Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour, Law and Order: Los Angeles, Body of Proof, No Ordinary Family, Detroit 1-8-7, and Downtown Abbey from the UK.

NB: The list is not comprehensive.

  1. I don’t like the idea of ch 7 buying Downton Abbey. They’re bound to stuff it up somehow and it would be much better without ads. I guess the ABC couldn’t afford the rights. 🙁

  2. We do need more legal dramas on tv they are fun, The key to any new show becoming a hit is good writers and good actors, and ideally an original idea.

  3. The title Crownies makes it sound more like a show about people sitting around drinking beer. Hmm, might be an idea in that. The Royle Family with bogans…

  4. What is it with the damn ABC. After years of scraps for drama series, when they finally pull their finger out, it’s all damn pitiful legal shows. Don’t they realise all young lawyer shows fail and are absolute disasters (The Young Lawyers, Deep End etc.) The ABC is so out of touch it isn’t funny.

Good news about Seven though, as I really don’t see Winners being a hit if they follow the easy path of concentrating on solely women’s issues and their sex lives.

I sort of hope City Homicide gets axed, it was okay up until all this Nick and Jennifer crap. Australia deserves better.

  5. Also, Shine Australia is working on something called “The Wild Life”. Don’t know which network is attached to it, though. I remember an ’80s comedy-drama film by that name. It revolved around a group of suburban late teens and the trouble they get into as they navigate new found freedom. Would be a nice, youth appealing accompaniment to Seven’s other, slightly older skewing, comedy drama.

  6. I reckon medical would do well. All saints was a hit till the very end. There arent any others on commercial tv and the import medicaid are dropping back.

But anything other than cops I would be happy with

  7. Yay, The more aussie drama, the better!! Please commercial networks, look at screening Tangle and find funding for a series 3, its appalling that we have to start so many new drama’s then they dont see the light of day, buried in foxtel/austar, lets hope Crownies offers the industry and viewers some fresh bright and new, what did ever happen to the pilot for Secretary with Pia Miranda and Kimberly Davies?? \Winners and Losers will be a hit i predict, and please Inisde Out has to debut by mid year to fill the Neighbours void on 10. Its like the poor show is about to sink into the abyss! Long Live australian television drama!!! How about repeating Chances and Pacific Drive on GEM?
Margot Freedman for a logie, her portrayal as Donna grieving Ringo is amazing!

  8. I tell ya. Seven are not the network to rest on their laurels when they loose a bit of ground like they have this year. 2 new dramas and potentially not a cop show in sight. Plus amazing race. All good signs.

  9. Wonder if they’ll renew Iron Chef? I think it is rating slightly better than Minute to Win It did in the same timeslot. Seven have had problems all year with that 7.30pm Tuesday slot, a slot that they once owned when Dancing with the Stars was on Tuesdays.
