New ABC comedy Outland is looking for volunteers for the filming of a Gay Pride March to take place in Melbourne later this month.
Details are as follows:
DATE: Friday 26 November 2010
PLACE: Catani Gardens between Beaconsfield Parade and Fitzroy Street, St Kilda
tram 96 or 16
TIME: From 8 am (it’s an all day shoot and filming starts early)
DRESS: Fabulous!
But please NO science fiction costumes or the colour PURPLE (unless it’s part of the rainbow).
You don’t need to dress up (or be gay) to come along, but you can be as awesome as you want.
BRING: Flags, banners and colourful stuff.
As filming TV isn’t always as fun as watching TV, there will be some slow times when the fabulous crowd isn’t needed. So picnics, games and friends will make the non-filming times fun. You’ll also be able to do some star spotting and see how a TV show is made.

So what you’re saying John, is that rather than excluding purple because of its symbolism, it will actually be the focus of the scenes, so that no matter what you do, the most important colour in the scene will be purple, like your eye will be drawn to the characters who are wearing purple, the symbolic colour of gay women.
Why is it suddenly so quiet in here….?
As John said, the “no purple” is just because the lead cast are all dressed in purple and they need to stand out from the fabulous crowd.
The no purple is (as John said) because the leads are dressed in all purple and need to stand out from the fabulous crowd. It’s just a design thing.
Isn’t purple the colour of sexual frustration? 😉
Looking forward to this show!
The leads will be dressed in purple and we want them to stand out. Originally they were going to be another colour but the design changed. No great meaning behind it, just a choice for visual impact. I hope we’ll see you all there!
lol so the main characters are dressed as purple sci-fi freaks???
Why no purple? Seems bizarre. However when you realise that the rainbow is the symbol of gay men and purple (lavender) is the symbol of gay women you can see their motivation.
Gay pride in their vision consists of gay men only, with special directions given to the crowd designed to send a not welcome message to those pesky gay women.
It wold be like having a general flag waving parade with special directions given “no rainbow flags welcome” We get their point.
Ok, I’ll bite. Why no purple? I like purple!
At least they are not being cheapskates and using library footage.
That’s only a 5 minute walk from my house! Might check it out ^_^
They want you! They want you!
let the stereotypes begin
