But what show do they really want?

Can you guess what shows the Network Programmers really want?

Today’s feature article concludes a series of interviews with Network programming bosses from ABC1, SBS, TEN, Seven and Nine*.

Each has spoken about some of their 2011 highlights, with particular emphasis on their first quarter offerings. They have been comprehensive and frank in their discussions, and taken the odd tough question on the chin.

All of them have been just as curious to read what their counterparts had to say.

No other media publication has been able to provide such access to all the decision-makers at this time of the year.

But there is one more question TV Tonight put to them all.

What show from another network would you like on your own?

Their answers will be revealed tomorrow, but today you are free to speculate on what shows each might have picked….

Hint: not all of them are necessarily “hit shows.”

Let the guessing games begin!

  1. From a sporting perspective, I’m sure Seven would want the Olympics back, Nine would want the AFL and Ten/One would want something like V8 Supercars to compliment their other motorsport commitments. ABC would like the Netball back and SBS would go for the A-League.

  2. Tried to make decisions based on what the networks currently have on their schedule and what seems to be their target audience, rather than the “let’s list every high rating TV show that other networks have!” approach

    ABC want: Harry’s Law or Blue Bloods – both skew significantly older, right in ABC’s ballpark

    SBS want: Top Gear, obvious reasons

    Seven want: Big Bang Theory, would work almost hand in hand How I Met Your Mother

    Nine want: A reality show that people can text/call/e-mail into, so Idol, X Factor, MasterChef, the list goes on.

    Ten want: Rafters – An Australian drama that isn’t… well Rush, where half the scenes are thrown in just so they can make the 38-42 min requirement for an hour long TV show, possibly Criminal Minds, so they can become Australia’s new age CBS, since they already have shows like Five-0 The Good Wife, NCIS and Blue Bloods.

  3. I could see Ten wanting Family Guy desperately and The Big Bang Theory.

    Seven would like Glee and The Good Wife – both fit their demos well

    Maybe Nine wants Rush – given how they have that rip-off show (whose name escapes me)

    ABC and SBS would just want all their shows back (GNW, Kath & Kim, Top Gear etc)

  4. ABC- anything the BBC made 2 years ago as its cheap
    SBS- anything anyone made 4 years ago because its Real cheap
    Nine, Seven and TEN- anything that has been done before and is risk averse, has solid demogs and stats from US audience testing and cheap
    Television Sydney/31 Melb/Briz Tv etc..- anything that is free
    ONE- any US sport that is cheap
    Eleven- they have all the US programming they need for the next 10-15 years

    Sorry, call me cynical, but as a program maker for 20 years, this is the reality.

  5. Hmmm. Interesting concept for a pointless, and very wrong, rant. My favourite.

    Nine. Deadwood. I reckon they feel its lost on the ABC and could be huge on a commercial network. The Wire, for similar reasons. AFL. Biggest Loser (this is, after all, the channel that thought fatty dancing was a good idea). Masterchef.

    Ten. Spicks and Specks. Qi. Cheap panel shows in the GNW mould (or is that mold?). The Wire, Obama thinks it cool. Doctor Who, even if they did fail badly with Torchwood. NRL on One. Yeah, whoever first said Family Guy is right on the money, add the somewhat lesser American Dad. The ads for Bob’s Burgers make it look like a disaster for the so-called “animation fixation” – so bad its a surprise Nine didn’t pick it up.

    Seven. NRL. Masterchef. Dexter. Idol.

    ABC. Dateline. Undebelly.

    SBS. A-League. English Premier League. Getting Top Gear back is obvious to everyone.

  6. 9 : mkr, grand designs
    7 : survivor, big bang ,
    10 : hot seat , how I met your mum,
    minute to win it
    abc: bondi vet / recuce,
    sbs: top gear ( we want it back)

  7. how about something from 4 to 630 like music or quiz show that are based for older teens early 20.s si it can help out neighbours out a bit repeats of family ties r a joke it not a great lead in for neighbours

  8. 9= neighbours
    7= carols by candlelight
    9=bigbrother
    7=2.5 men
    9= monday night afl
    10=7 news at 430 ,6pm news.today tonight.abc news at 7, 730 report
    9= masterchef
    10= days of ourlives and young and the restless

  9. I must agree with Woody, TEN would want Family Guy, my bet for ELEVEN 🙂
    Whats the point of having Animation Fixation without Family Guy D:
    Thats the only reason why I don’t want Animation Fixation: Family guy! Just like on Fox 8, now thats what i call animation xD

  10. @ JD. I agree with your idea of Ten launching a music channel it would rate its sox off for sure, or at least put Video Hits on 11 on prime time from 6pm to 8pm. They should do that to celebrate 25 yrs on air. Will it happen probably not i guess 50 50 at best. Networks don’t always to the obvious especially when it makes sense to do so.

  11. 7 Network: Masterchef
    9 Network: Modern Family
    Network 10: Australian Open ( to boost one hd and to give the viewers a decent coverage of the Grand Slam of Asia Pacific)

  12. Channel 7 – NRL…why have a Matty Johns show without wanting the main thing
    Channel 10 – Sunrise…and high profile sports for OneHD to make it more relevant
    Channel 9 – Masterchef

  13. One area 7 is lacking is a popular AFL show, so my guess would be they’d like the AFL footy show. And perhaps 9 would like the Matty Johns show for the NRL states.
