Hughesy’s 7PM segues -it’s an art.

Honestly, how does he do it?
Not since Anna Coren’s segues on Today Tonight have we had such creative segues as those of Dave Hughes on The 7PM Project.
Imagine seeing the rundown on such serious topics as unrest in the Middle East and the Ricky Nixon saga knowing that you have to link to whacky videos in the middle of it all.
But by now Hughesy has gotten it down to a fine art.
Last night after a general piece on the big names who had been invited to the Royal Wedding invite list, he said:
“Maybe somebody who should be invited is a Brisbane jewellery shop owner…… because this guy has the best manners in the world.” [Cut to video of jewellery robbery and polite show owner.]
Who felt that bump in the road? Not me.
After a story on the growing public unrest and fight for independence in the Middle East he offered:
“Let’s go to a happy overseas story. In China a baby panda was born….” [Cut to loopy video of baby panda].
From the Middle East to a baby panda. Try doing that on The 7:30 Report.
Then following a story on the ICC Cricket World Cup it was:
“Talking sport, golfer Aaron Baddeley won a big tournament in America today…” [Cut to video of Baddeley’s wife giving terse comment to journo].
Ok that one was pretty seamless.
The Chaser used to highlight Coren’s segues on TT but maybe we have a new contender.
Take a bow, Hughesy, they sure give you the rough end of the pineapple and you still manage to make something of it every night. Seriously.

I can’t tell whether this article’s supposed to sarcastic or serious.
Forward Scout, you talk absolute bollocks. Adam Hills’ conversations with guests on Spicks’n’Specks sometimes veer off in tangents that could not be scripted. He has a very quick wit.
heads up peeps…DH is reading the prompter with words that the writers provided. he has zero to do with the words he speaks. hence the difference between ‘talent’ and a ‘newsreader’. Similarly, that fellow on gordon street, ‘hillsy’, is reading prepared scripts on the prompter and cant ad lib to save his ABC life.
Dave Hughes is definitely the glue holding that panel together. Without his spark, Charlie and Carrie’s earnestness would weigh the whole show down. I like them both, but I swear Charlie sometimes acts like he’s working for The 7.30 Report. And I think Hughes’s random segues lighten the mood as much the clips – isn’t that the point?
He’s worn me down! 20 something months of it, and i am beginning to like Dave Hughes – a little. When he sorts out what he needs or wants to say, he is fine – strangely improv and he aren’t great friends. He does provide a different approach from earnest and sincere Charlie, and emotive and journo like Carrie. He enjoys a warm cameraderie with the panel – and that comes across – and that is the endearing quality of this show. Some of the issues are interesting, the guests ditto, the panelists still mixing it up for better or worse. It is working fine!
I just find half his comments juvenile and completely off the mark most of the time. If he engaged his brain whilst watching half his clips he would realise that no, they are not really that funny.
I find Carrie as grating as ever, Charlie seems to be getting lost in the mix and it is the guest hosts that are the most entertaining these days.
@Adam,
Yes this is a blog and, as such, the blogger is entitled to blog about whatever they wish. But, when the blog is open to public comment, members of the public are entitled to express their respective opinions. Of course, the blogger always has the right to not post those opinions.
Those of you saying this is a pointless article are forgetting that this is a Blog.
I think it works well and is less jarring simply because of the humour. it suits the style of the show and makes it flow. Anna’s segues tended to be pointless.
I agree with David Knox, not only has Hughesy developed as an on-air presenter both on Televison and radio in the past 2 years but he is the glue that makes the difference between a good flowing edition of the 7pm project and an edition that feels like it’s a bunch of clips stuck together and don’t make alot of sense.
I like Hughesy’s clips. He can get away with just about anything by flashing his cheeky, gappy grin.
Hughesy was a bit unsure when the show started, but he has found his niche here, and it’s working well with me.
@Dylan, other guests (Tom Gleeson in particular) are quicker with some good calls, but Hughesy is underrated on the show for pulling some bits together – like David notes. The show without him often jolts around trying to get from one topic to the next with awkward looks across the desk.
100% correct Dylan.
Slow news day? I happen to like Dave Hughes and his segue’s. This site is dedicated to Television News to suit all readers and I think his segue’s deserve a mention. Those clips are usually the highlights of the episode.
The 7PM Project:
“You know what’s funny, this clip…” {play clip} “haha… That clip was funny”
@Dylan… Your observation is spot on.
Hmmmmmmmm. Pointless.
Anyone else hate this guy as much as i do??
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Please that is nothing compared to Anna Coren’s segues. In fact they were pretty basic really.
Didn’t you see Media Watch? If faux pas is now fopar then surely it’s now ‘segway’.
not much happenin’ right?
Is it just me or is Hughesy never funny on The 7PM Project? Both Charlie and Carrie have improved since episode one but he hasn’t. Plus his fill-ins are always better, funnier and quicker than him – Dave, Chrissie and Denise. Get him off!
