Seven wins while Nine, TEN struggle.

With Nine and TEN both struggling behind the scenes over separate problems, Seven notches up its third knockout blow in the weekly ratings.

Seven has notched up another knockout blow in the weekly survey ratings -its third win for the year.

Seven grabbed the first seven shows in the weekly top ten, with just one apiece to TEN and Nine. Packed to the Rafters and My Kitchen Rules continue to underpin the network’s surge.

It is the second week in a row that Seven wins the hat trick: topping network, primary and digital channel wins, demos, all nights and all cities.

Behind the scenes Nine is struggling to keep its primetime schedule intact while TEN is reeling from managerial challenges. Has there ever been a more tumultuous start to the ratings year?

  1. @Allie; you are totally correct… There is a reason that come dine with me is on pay tv raking in a huge 20000 viewers, meanwhile MKR has 1.6 million!! Some people just cannot work their remote control ..

  2. I think Seven will have a strong year overall. I can’t see them being beaten. The only 3 shows i am worried that might hurt them is Masterchef (obviously), Underbelly Razor and Hamish and Andy. The latter 2 on Nine though could also fall flat on their faces because Nine is doing quite poorly now and the UB movies didn’t rate anywhere near what Nine was expecting.

Nine and TEN main channels are in huge troble atm being both under 20% individually. Sure the digital channels are coming into play but you know what i think 7TWO is also having a massive impact on Nine. If you think about it, this channel skews over 55’s deliberately with the British stuff and that was part of Nine’s key audience. Now that that has been hampered and 7mate plus Seven are doing well in the important 3 key demo’s Nine are flat-lining.

  3. I don’t understand how ppl can watch 7 or their associated digital channels. It’s a huge borefest for me. If I could delete them from my channel list, I would.

  4. I think Nine are in a worse position than Ten. They just have nothing at all on the horizon. The NRL in the northern states is about it. Nine are in front of Ten becuase of their 6-7pm hour. Their rubbish sitcoms and boring US shows just don’t cut it.

Ten have masterchef coming which will give it a good launch pad for the rest of their schedule post Easter. People are not finding the shows Ten have. They have many underrated shows which deserve more viewers. Honestly, The Good Wife has been simply brilliant this season.

Seven are doing well by default. Let’s face it. Their shows are rubbish. People who like MKR and Home and Away have no brains. It’s bogan TV at its best. I don’t care what the figures are…they are rubbish shows. I only watch PTTR on Seven. And I will be watching Amazing Race on 7mate.

  5. What are Nine going to do about this long-term I wonder? The gap is getting scary. Without Underbelly the situation is about to get a lot worse. If This is Your Life fails deliver tonight it will be panic stations.

  6. It baffles me why a show as tedious as MKR has rated so well. I would have normally ignored the show, only I now have a housemate who is a fan, so I had a chance to try and see what all the fuss was about. I’m still scratching my head.

  7. Thats funny seeing ABC2 beat ONE HD , the biggest flop of a FTA digital channel we have and the ABC Network nipping the heels of the TEN Network.
Also MKR is a fun show that doenst take itsself too seriously and the banter and bitchiness between the groups is good fun.

  8. I wonder what people would say if the ratings were different with the same programs with Seven struggling and Nine and Ten winning. What would people say if that cooking show on 7 was getting under 500k per episode and both 7 News and Today Tonight were around 300k while George Negus and 10 evening News hit 1.2mil despite being exactly the same as they have been. What if 7 were struggling to beat the ABC? Nine’s “Home of Comedy” could have been a huge success with Ben Elton pulling over 1 mil each week. If it did, would people still be so negative about it? People are saying to axe it which Nine have but people also complain about shows getting taken off after a few weeks . 10’s 6-7pm block has been criticized and we know Simpsons and Neighbours are 11 shows now. 10 should swap George and EN around and see how that goes.

The ratings are only a small sample of the population so 7 may not actually be as popular as the ratings suggest plus some regional areas prefer Win/NBN. I only watched 3 1 hr programs in prime time on 7 being Rafters, Brothers and Sisters and Desperate Housewives. I also watch Home and Away on 7two yet I watch SBS in prime time more than 7 with Letters and Numbers, Big Love and Insight. I watch the other 3 networks more.

  9. I don’t think the problems for 10 are nearly as bad as everyone is making out. Nine’s certainly in deep trouble but 10 got into the Top 8 and then managed to secure 11th’s with NCIS. Nine got 9th and 13th and that’s only with news programming.

So I say to 10, stick with it, you may not win the year but with Nine crumbling under the weight of its own ego. And Seven soon to follow you could get 2nd this year.

  10. It’d be good if 9 and 10 were ready to capitalise on a possible fall from grace at 7. Rafters will continue to lose core cast (Packed to the Ring ins), Winners and Losers is based on a very shaky premise so may very well flop and that Wild Boys thing sounds shamefully clueless. Unfortunately, 9 &10’s drama depts are just too out of touch to take the lead.

  11. @Mr Chandler, MKR is in no way an exact replica of Come Dine With Me. For a start, it is not a licensed copy of it, it is a completely different production. Yes, there are similarities, but only in the first round when the dinner parties take place. The dinner parties are the only similar point of reference between the two shows. After that, when it shifts into the elimination rounds done in the studio kitchen, it bears absolutely no similarity to CDWM whatsoever.

  12. I’m just waiting for Nine(Titanic) to shuffle their chairs(show) in the coming week as the ship goes down. With last years performance I was expecing it to turn around but shows like Top Gear are just not performing as they did 12 months ago. And now with the ‘Sheen’ coming off Two and a Half Men, Nine are in desperate need for a hit show to bring things back up. And quite frankly new shows like Mr Sunshine or Harry’s Law are just not going to do it IMO.

  13. @Mr Chandler

The reason so many people are watching MKR is because in their opinion it is a good show. It may be similar to Come Dine With Me, but it is nowhere near an exact replica.

  14. Mr Chandler – Out of interest do you watch MKR? I personally do not however it seems that you seem to know what the show is all about (ditto for Home and Away) but all I ever see is you complaining about the two?

  15. i can’t understand for the life of me. that mkr is rating so well. if you want to watch a show like this. change your channel to 118 on foxtel. because it is exact replica of come dine with me and it’s worse than come dine with me

  16. Channel 7 have clearly the most likable programs. The smartest move was made by them to start MKR at the start of the ratings season. MKR was a strong peformer last year ending with a very respectable figure for it’s finale. The Nine Network have played the comedy card which has failed to deliver the punch they were hoping for. They lack a 7pm lead in for their primetime viewing audience. 7 have ‘Home and Away’ and with it tracking close or over a million viewers a night they surley are in the box seat to increase their numbers across the board. I see the only problem 7 have is the audience that leave the network on Tuesday nights when ‘Rafters’ finish. Having said that 9.30pm has never really been a strong rating slot anyway. I remember ‘Stingers’ needing to reach a million viwers to stay on air, maybe these days a million in any time slot is classed as good numbers. I think the bigger question is… Why are people not watching tv like they used to? Ten, well… They lost me when they introduced News after 6pm. The figures are saying that. I guess it’s good for us beacuse we get more variety as the networks rush in new shows to improve their ratings. Bring on the footy i say!

  17. @Ranco – what are you on about? Are you saying that Seven are winning because less people overall are watching? If less people are watching Nine and Ten it’ll be because of the programming (content and constant changes) not because they’re out shopping.

You might also need to brush up on your maths (and your memory) if you think that a single high-rating show that’s on for one hour a week is solely responsible for pushing Seven to number one. You’re further kidding yourself if you think that the return of Masterchef will be Ten’s salvation. It wasn’t last year and it won’t be this year. Ten needs more than one mega-hit to even have a sniff of second place for 2011.

  18. Channel ten appears to be the problem, but ABC had a good week falling within range of beating channel 10.

Seven blitzed them all having 8 of the the top 10 shows.

  19. Reasons are because overall TV figures are down. The way seven(west) are winning is because of the king show that actually gets above 1.1million and that is pack to the rafters. If Masterchef can pull 1.5mil every night this year well Ten might have a chance

  20. Seven’s schedule appears to be very strong this year, so Nine and Ten better get used to playing second fiddle for some time. Seven was off the boil somewhat last year, but they seem to have really bounced back. MKR has turned out to be a major hit in its second series, rating very strongly from the first episode, which it didn’t do last year – it took a while to build an audience. Nine’s “Home of Comedy” is a complete non-event provoking massive yawns from the audience and won’t win them anything.
