GEM reviving Sunday movies

GEM has been making quiet steps to offer a return to the tradition of the Sunday Night Movie, and next weekend has Gran Torino.

In case you hadn’t noticed, GEM has been making quiet steps to offer a return to the tradition of the Sunday Night Movie.

On Sunday night it had the Free to Air premiere of Fracture (2007) with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling.

This coming Sunday it has the excellent Gran Torino (2008) in which Clint Eastwood appears as a disgruntled Korean War veteran who sets out to reform his young neighbour who tried to steal his old 1972 car.

It is another Free to Air premiere.

And the beauty of these is that they are airing in HD.

It airs 8:30pm Sunday on GEM.

  1. Hopefully we’ll also be able to watch the movie in full – including the end credits if one wants to! I know this is only a very minor thing to whinge about, but my pet hate is the way the main channels ( 7 in particular) butcher the end credits by squeezing them into the lower frame so that they can run even more Network Promos during the final moment of a movie. The credits are raced through on turbo-fast forward with no hope in hell of actually being able to read them. No chance to even listen to the closing sound track if you want to. The Networks are legally required to roll the end credits, but to get around it this way is a little tacky. Anyway had to get that off my chest, I’ll go get a life now…

  2. I cant remember the last time i watched a movie in Full on FTA , theres that little thing called Blu – Ray and DVD with no ads , so why bother to put yourself through all those same old advertisements.

  3. ONE having been showing HD movies on Friday nights for the last few weeks and have ads for a whole heap of HD films to be shown on Fridays.

Good that GEM have started showing HD films as well. Gran Torino is quality.

  4. 7Mate is also reviving “blockbuster movies”. On one hand it is good but as with any movie night it only works if the movies are good and worth watching. I would not be holding my breath as far as sport in hd is concerned. The only Network who offered the people sport in HD has been taken over by media barrons and a disgruntled mining heiress. Say goodbye to sport in HD people, unless that is you are wiling to pay.

  5. Movies on TV are ruined by ads and watermarks. IMO the watermark should be optional like Closed Captions or Subtitles, i.e. the viewer can turn them off. It has been shown that they don’t stop networks stealing each others footage. They have lost their raison d’etre.

  6. I was so sure Fracture had been on Nine before, unless they pulled it when it was meant to air.

its good that the new channels are airing Sunday night movies like they used to back in the day. Go, 11, Gem, 7mate do it while crime shows and reality fill their main channels sunday slot so at least theres more choice like the ads for freeview say.

  7. For me Sundays are too busy. I watch the 7two line up. But I guess it’s always good to have an alternative. For me personally I’d still prefer to have a Saturday night movie line up.

  8. Uncut, watermark free and limited (or no) commercial breaks?

Didnt think so… Movies on FTA are spoilt. I can put up with commercials, but not watermarks or censorship. Reminds me of watching a VCD from the early 2000’s

  9. It would be better if Gem revived State of Origin & NRL matches in HD. Only then would I bother to watch Gem. Most people who wanted to see this movie have done so by now anyway.
