‘Good Christian Bitches’ is now just ‘GCB’

From "bitches" to "belles" to just plain, old B?

It was a title that was too good to last….especially with the power of the Bible Belt and affiliate networks in middle America.

ABC’s Good Christian Bitches was switched to Good Christian Belles when it was greenlit to a series. Ugh.

Now it’s just going to be known as GCB. Ugh again.

The dramedy is based on the book Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin and features Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts and David James Elliott.

After $#*! My Dad Says from CBS, should we really be that surprised?

  2. There is a wonderful article concerning this series: huffingtonpost.com/cathleen-falsani/good-christian-bitches_b_912752.html. In order for satire to work, there has to be truth behind it so going by the “offended” people on this post, maybe these same people really need to take a good look at the behaviour of the people in their churches instead of complaining because televisio is simply mimicking real life.

  3. As a Christian, I am appalled that those words Christian and b-tches would be in the same phrase. Yes, there are some Christians who may not carry themselves as Christ does, but based on what I have researched about this show, it really gives us and the name of Christ a bad name.

  5. What i see here is a lot people complaing about a lot of people complaining. This is an american show. Which was modified to suit Americans. If you don’t like it, go make a show yourself. And mucho i think you’re spot on. Got to laugh at how well shows like seventh heaven etc are going, Maybe people are just sick of all the crassness and want some style over catchy titles.

  6. all i ever hear is “might offend some..”, “expected to offend”, “could be offensive”. is anyone ever actually offended by this stuff?

    The Bible belt get their way a lot, there are still 45 states in America without marriage equality, despite equality supposedly being a pillar of American culture. if they are in for a loss even for something as small as a tv show title, i wouldn’t be complaining.

  8. Every woman in that show appears to have expressionless faces. It’s kind of sad to see them all botoxed up to their eyelids. Particularly the main lady.

    That’s more offensive than “Good Christian Bitches.”

  9. While I am dismayed at the power of the “bible belt”, and I think GCB is a bad name, I am glad misogynous names are not being used in the title of a program that will be promoted during early prime time, when children are watching television.

  14. THe title is or was awesome, it would have defintetly been intreaged and wanting to watch it. Now its just like any other pc country censoring the titles just because some people who live under a rock cant handle it. In my opinion this is exactly why creativity is dieing and dieing fast.

  15. @ MuchoTB, I think David mentioning the Bible Belt was in the context of the story, and not anti-religious as you suggest. It amazes me that Churches of various religions get all high and mighty about morals and decency, yet child abuse, both sexual and physical has been rampant in their institutions for years.
    Belief in a god, who may or may not exist, does not give them the right to decide what the rest of us watch.

  17. @MuchoTB: Anti religion? I’m obviously missing something here. Recognising the power of the Bible Belt to enact change has nothing to do with religion and is an observation of the power of democracy.

    The watering down of the show’s title is a direct result of the influence of a large market segment.

  18. I cant imagine not wanting to watch a TV show because the word Bitch was removed – seems silly to me. If its a good show, you’ll watch it regardless

    Its the Pulp Fiction syndrome. So many people thought it was this great movie because it was full of swearing, yet if the movie had been released without swearing, no one would have watched it.

  19. @ MuchoTB….oh and one other thing… if young children want to watch a show of this natire….its up to the parents to decide & not you…..once again..this is why we have a classification system to advise.

  20. Me thinks some people doth protest too much. Sounds like a perfect title for those types to me.

    I bet there would be no outrage if there was a show was called “Bad Muslim Bastards” (I do not subscribe to this way of thinking in any way, shape or form – I am just astounded at the hypocrisy of the US bible belt)

  21. @ MuchoTB… David is so correct here… I am not sure what intitles u to judge what ppl watch on TV… that is why there are classifications on each program that is produced…
    life has changed alot since u were a little tacker…. u either stay in the past or move forward…. swearing many years ago was not an acceptable way of communication.. but now its more acceptable… but that does not mean we have to use them to get a point across… and because one uses the swear words, it doesnt mean that their education is poor…
    my suggestion to u is this… thank your for your comment here… please dont reply back cos it one argument u wont win…. cos society has changed. keep up with it.

  22. I know you’re an extremely secular person David and this isn’t your first anti-religion article, but I reckon you’re off your rocker on this one. Would we really want a program with ‘bitch’ in the title airing in primetime? There’s enough immorality and moral decay happening in the world around us as it is, the last thing we need is an eight year old kid starting to call all the girls in his class ‘bitches’ because he saw it was ok to call them that on TV.

    To me the people you chat to who feel the urge to swear in every sentence are showing more of a low IQ and lack of articulation than anything else. As for making that the title of a primetime television series, get real. When I was younger there were wholesome, family-oriented programs airing in primetime, these days you can turn on an episode of Criminal Minds on Channel 7 at 8:30, and there’s someone’s lips getting cut off by a serial killer. Just not necessary. Neither is crassness for the sake of being crass, thats why Ben Elton was axed.

    1. MuchoTB: A lot of ideas there, but a TV Title change is worthy of News here. I’m not sure of the classification of the show, but I suspect it wouldn’t be directed at 8 year olds. If producers are happy to dramatise the book, it is disappointing a network sees fit to begin to compromise on its vision (still, TV production has always been about compromise). TV already airs plenty of shows that offend, but people are welcome to switch them off. As for generalisations about my own beliefs, I’ll simply say your statement is untrue. I’ve also filed a number of articles on the excellent Compass series (this Sunday’s episode is expecially good), amongst others. As a title, Good Christian Bitches worked on a Desperate Housewives level for me. But I’m less excited to watch GCB.

  25. Ick! The title was one of the things that drew my curiosity to this series. Now it sounds like it’s being watered down ten-fold. Just thing of a completely new title that isn’t quite so offensive but keeps some edge.
