MasterChef makes its mark

MasterChef has immediately shaken up the ratings game, with Seven winning in Total People but slipping to third in key demos for Week 19.

The MasterChef effect has begun for 2011.

TEN’s reality series, now in its third season, has immediately shaken up the ratings game, lifting TEN’s overall share. Just as Seven’s coding for My Kitchen Rules aided its weekly ratings, now MasterChef benefits from the same tactic, sweeping half of the week’s Top Ten. Indeed, TEN pulled out all first five titles of the week, with The Biggest Loser finale topping Week 19.

While there was no change to the pecking order with Seven beating Nine and TEN in Total People, significantly Seven fell to third place in the key demos.

  1. I know in America the demos are what every one cares about – is that the same here? Do advertisers care if 7 are winning in total people if it’s a bunch of old people watching it?

  2. Ten won it’s target demo 18-49
Nine won it’s target demo 25-54

I guess MasterChef coming on and Rafters going off is enough to swing the ratings significantly. Seven has done a fantastic job this year though.

  3. The loser finale didnt do 2 mill last year. This year’s was roughly on par with 2010’s finale which is great considering the landscape.

  4. Wow.

the digital channel share is the big shake up. There was not much difference between the primary channels but Seven was way ahead thanks to the multichannel aspect. Bet TEN is hoping the revamp of ONE will help come in at least 2nd for the week now

  5. Interesting to note the Logies has now been separated from the Red Carpet (they were coded together last week) with the Red Carpet lower than the ceremony itself. In previous years it has been the reverse.

  6. Nine News and ACA beat Seven News and TT by a significant margin in Brisbane. It’s significant because those margins aren’t usually that high, let alone in Nine’s favour. Brisbane viewers are certainly turning to Nine News and ACA during the week, but their figures for Weekend News is a worry.

But still, well done QTQ for winning every weeknight of the week which they probably haven’t done for a couple of years. It couldn’t be because Karl mentioned them at the Logies, could it?

  7. There is a flaw with the ratings system

Why is that the viewers in Melbourne is larger, often significantly larger than in Sydney, yet Sydney has a significantly higher population than Melbourne.

  8. Are you serious Jimmy? TBL is Ten’s second biggest show behind Masterchef, and the only one which pulled close to a million viewers every night for them while the rest of their schedule seriously flounded this year (excluding Glee and NCIS). If you think it will be canceled, you’re kidding yourself

  9. @Jimmy – The figures for Biggest Loser are very good considering the current television landscape. There have already been ads for next season’s constestants so it won’t be cancelled. It has been a solid performer for Ten this year.

  10. Thinking about the article this week about network programmers talking about changing schedules I wonder how long can SP stay at 830 Tuesday? I also wonder why it was programmed there in the first place and who takes responsibility for that given the number 1 audience grievance with FTA is timeslot changes (particularly with no notice).
