So long, Mary Hart.

This week Mary Hart left Entertainment Tonight after nearly 30 years, an achievement that lands her a Guinness World Record.

It sure is a time for female broadcasters to take their leave from our screens and this week Mary Hart left Entertainment Tonight after nearly 30 years.

She even broke a Guinness World Record for the “longest serving entertainment news host”.

Here’s a rather cheesy retrospective clip, full of lots of gushing compliments. But how can we not respect such endurance?

Below is the first of 3 clips looking back over her career.

  1. It was great that her old co-hosts came back for her last show: John Tesh, Bob Goen and Rob Weller. The song and dance number by last co-host Mark Steines was one of the cheesiest things I have ever seen in my life. 😆

  2. Never missed this show when it was actually about entertainment news and reviews. Have avoided it since the focus turned to gossip and reality airheads. I’m another who preferred Leeza Gibbons. Felt she had so much more personality and chemistry with co-hosts. Never got the appeal of Ms. Hart.

  3. This is true.

    Mary Hart Syndrome –

The case of Dianne Neale, 49, appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the much-publicised 1991 event, Neale apparently suffered epileptic seizures at hearing the voice of Entertainment Tonight co-host Mary Hart. Neale experienced an upset stomach, a sense of pressure in her head, and confusion. Laboratory tests confirmed the abnormal electrical discharges in her brain, and Neale had a press conference to insist that she was not crazy. She said she bore no hard feelings toward Hart, who apologised on the air for the situation.

  4. This is sad news, she was so easy on the eye as well. A beautiful woman that can never be replaced, she was the only reason why I watched, her beauty radiated every time she was on screen. I wish she came down under so we can do something with her.

  5. Whenever I hear the name Mary Hart, the first thing that comes to mind is the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer suffers a seizure whenever he hears her voice.

  6. @ David – I like how in the clips you have posted that they are in 16:9 widescreen HD, while Arena shows time in 4:3 cropped SD. Arena spent a fair bit in converting Ellen to 16:9 widescreen while maintaining the closed captions (which were only available in the 16:9 HD feed), so why not do the same for ET? Wish Foxtel/Austar would pull their fingers out and launch more entertainment HD simulcasts! The last to launch was Lifestyle and they have that little HD programming its a waste of bandwidth and money. The only HD programming to be shown is Donna Hay and thats a one episode a week program! Arena has roughly 20% of its daily programming in HD yet they picked Lifestyle to launch first – rediculous.

  7. I loved the show when it was actually an entertainment based show, going behind the scenes of movies and tv shows etc. But that was a loooong time ago. These days it’s just another glossy, gossipy piece of televisual chewing gum, all sugary and colourful on the outside and recycled rubber on the inside.
Still, credit where it’s due.. it’s amazing for a host to last that long on tv, on the one show especially being female. Congratulations, Mary. 😉

  8. I’m with you, David, it is quite an achievemement, but then i always preferred Leeza Gibbons and Dixie Whatley over Mary Hart, but she was the survivor! At least Kramer (Michael Richards) can stop having those seizures from her voice!
I hope she uses her fame and recognizability for good from here on.

  9. She had one of the most annoying voices imaginable and the show was the ultimate glossy magazine without any substance. Who really watches this trash? The brain dead?
