The Voice set to sing on Nine

Shine Australia will produce an Australian version of talent quest The Voice for Nine

Shine Australia will produce an Australian version of talent quest The Voice for Nine.

The US version, which features Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton has debuted strongly, attracting an audience of almost 12 million viewers.

Based on a Dutch format, The Voice of Holland, it requires judges to audition singers, ‘blind’ by listening to the acts with their backs to them.

It also has a greater focus on coaching and ”real talent”.

Shine Australia was also behind the now-cancelled TEN series, Don’t Stop Believing.

  1. David, if you are talking about the blind audition philosophy then i agree.

sounds like a naive gimmick to me, i dont think Idol or X factor have ever discriminated on looks, are they saying The Voice judges are incapable of doing the same unless their backs are turned?

but more importantly its the 21st century, people are realistic, they accept that talent alone is not enough. you need 6 things to be a star; image, personality, entertainment factor, work ethic, confidence And talent, you can have all of those things without being good looking but you can’t judge them with backs turned.

But that said, look at an American TV blog, everyone said the same for the NBC version and it turned out to be a hit, so we’ll have to wait and see.

  2. As Ten found out, Australia doesn’t have a large enough population to sustain
reality talent themed game shows. They’d only work if done every 4 years.

  3. Sydney “Sunday Telegraph” still claiming it’s TEN. The page was probably written mid-week. Generally the Sunday page is just a rehash of weekday items.

  4. It was only a matter of time… as people have pointed out, we just don’t have the talent pool to sustain all the singing competition shows like in the US. The last few seasons of Idol and X Factor proved that.

  5. Nine have zero history with this type of show so it will be interesting to see if it can find an audience. Surprised it didn’t go to Ten as they don’t have any performance/talent shows all year, and i think this is partly why Dancing and AGT are doing so well.

  6. As strange as it is that Daily Telegraph article is now non-existent. IMO i think they got it wrong. I just think Nine will kill this. Sorry TEN was a way better fit. Who is going to judge this? One thing for sure is either Jules, Catrina or Eddie will be host.

  7. I didn’t see Daily Telegraph article but SMH definitely says Nine for a local production. It would be odd to have different versions on rival networks.

    Dylan there is no contradiction.

  8. I said this elsewhere yesterday, when it looked like this would be going to TEN, and I will say it again, Australia needs another singing competition show like it needs a hole in the head! I shudder to think what nine will do with this. Jules Lund and Catriona Rowntree hosting, Bert and Darryl as judges..eek!

  9. I really do like this show and it takes xfactor to a whole new level. To me this decision seems very rushed, so I question its quality – particularly for nine which has a really poor reputation at times for australian reality shows. Also the australian singing talent pool is so small I dont know how they will find contestants, leta alone like 8 for each judge. Bring it down to like two for each judge and we might have a decent show.

  10. I’ve been watching the American version for a few weeks now and it’s good (the auditions were the best part, now it feels a little like every other singing show), but who could the Aussie version get as judges that would keep us interested?

  11. I think you are very confused – is it set for Nine or Ten? Reports on Friday had it for Ten and your headline and opening sentence are contradicted by the final sentence.
