Ratings race shake-up

The Block helps Nine wins demos, GO! sets a new record, MasterChef tops the week, everybody's talking about the SBS series -Week 26 shook up the ratings game.

Week 26 delivered some subtle shifts in television, but it’s too early to know if it was a one-off or part of a bigger change.

At Nine there was some good news. The Block has started well and helped Nine win 4 of 7 nights. Significantly, Nine won the two demo groups it seeks to win 18-49 and 25-54.

GO! broke the 10.0% share on Saturday night -a new record for a digital channel, thanks to the Transformers movie pulling a sensational 471,000 viewers. It even broke into the week’s Top 100 shows. As a result, GO! bettered 7TWO last week.

MasterChef Australia eclipsed Australia’s Got Talent as the week’s top show. TEN won the other key demo: 16-39.

Everybody was talking about SBS’ ground-breaking series Go Back To Where You Came From (including on all 3 commercial networks).

But despite their good week neither Nine nor SBS managed to get their best share for the year.

After all was said and done, Seven still won in Total People.

  1. The guy/people that manage to secure movies for Nine is doing a good job. He/she/they actually have the mind to think months in advance and screen the previous installments on a franchise before the new movie hits theaters.

We’ve seen it here with Transformers, Nine has done it for years with Harry Potter, Seven did a week or 2 ago with Kung Fu Panda. I can’t remember who has done with the Pirates franchise but i don’t think it was TEN. Hello TEN wake up!!!

  2. If everybody was talking about Go Back To Where you Came From, why did it receive low ratings? 565,000 185,000 188,000 84,000…I wouldn’t call those High ratings.

  3. I for one am glad the ABC have The Young Ones. I’m really glad they repeat it near midnight as that’s how I caught the first episode by accident; I then watched it in primetime last week. I like documentaries about science also about improving peoples lives. Not to mention Doctor Michael Mosley. I try to watch his shows wherever they show up. Although it’s stupid to have one of his shows against Catalyst. But that’s a different channel.

  4. Barrie, have you paid attention to ABC1 and ABC2’s schedules the past couple of years? ABC2 has way more scripted programming in primetime, and most of it is young skewing. The Young Ones doesn’t even fit ABC2 for late night repeats. The reality and docos that ABC2 shows are largely ones with young people like the various ‘Blood, Sweat & …’ series, and trashy ones about plastic surgery and so on.

  5. so how long before transformers gets repeated on gem and nine? a message to all FTA networks:- there are people home on saturday nights wanting something decent to watch. (not that transformers is my idea of decent). I agree with Mike Retter, ABC1 has some poor primetime programming choices…put reality/doco’s & alternative comedy on ABC2 (like young ones & manor bowen) and leave drama & sitcoms on ABC1….Dr Who rated better on Sundays

  6. Hey Guys, do we know how Winners & Losers is faring in its chance for a 2nd Season? It seems to be doing extremely well and the show is fantastic, and will be even better over time 🙂

  7. @Castle and Moanique – I think that where a program has more than one ep per week and is not separately coded, the weekly figure given above is an average for the week. The H&A number looks about right (their highest was 1,160k on Mon). However, the figure for the Block does seem low as the preliminaries show that they recorded 1,114k or above on 4 of the days, including 1,342k for Mon.

So either the prelims were erroneously high or there’s an error with the weekly calculation.

  8. Yep I think ch9 are slowly turning the corner. The Block should get a little stronger as they enter the houses. Ch7 will lse DA soon and are looking a bit weak on Mo, We, Th

  9. @ Moanique

The figures listed for The Block and Home and Away are their 5 day average, otherwise we would see multiple listings for each show inside the top 100. Based on those figures, Home and Away beat The Block for the week, despite the latter comfortably winning in preliminary figures. I think someone at Nine must have screwed up with the coding for it to drop so much.

  10. with Transformers doing so well, you would think they would premiere the second Transformers this Saturday night instead of Mission Impossible 3.

  11. Nine have got to be happy about winning the demos. It’s only one week but it demonstrates that having a show that targets the right demos and rates well five nights a week is better than one killer show, particularly if it’s older skewing; eg The Block or Masterchef against New Tricks or Downtown Abbey.

I really think it’s time we stopped focusing on total viewers – they’re only used for bragging rights. The people that spend the money all know that it’s the demos that are important. I also think that the collation of data for separate channels into network totals is bogus but this is unlikely to change until the digital landscape matures to the point where TV audiences see 15 channels instead of 5 network primaries plus a bunch of others.

  12. I think The ABC has to be adventuress and not pin all its hopes on Angry Boys. They need a Chaser program being provocative and making noise, the kind of publicity they used to get which you cannot buy. I think they should have a nightly tonight show on ABC2, with a young, talented comedian. They should not be playing shows like The Young Ones (not the sitcom but the reality series about old people that hits the ground like a lead balloon, to think they pay money for that rubbish, its as useless as the manner Bowen),

  13. “One swallow doth not a Summer make”, but our TV landscape is changing. The concept of a “Main” channel is slowly fading. GO! advertises Nine programs all the time but it is not reciprocated. Time for a rethink.
“Transformers” was scheduled over a week before and it actually got to air! That’s another message to think about.
