US cable network HBO has dominated the major categories of the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards in a year when network television is overshadowed in the Drama category.
New HBO dramas Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones will compete with Pay TV dramas Dexter, Friday Night Lights and Mad Men for the Drama award. The only network drama series in the category was The Good Wife.
Game of Thrones (pictured) premieres in Australia on Showcase this Sunday night.
But network television ruled the Comedy category with The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family, The Office, Parks And Recreation and 30 Rock.
Amongst the names competing for acting awards in Drama are Steve Buscemi, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Jon Hamm, Julianna Margulies, Kathy Bates and Mariska Hargitay.
Guy Pearce has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie for his performance in Mildred Pierce, which airs in Australia on Showcase next month.
In the Comedy category the names include Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Matt LeBlanc, Steve Carell, Alec Baldwin, Laura Linney, Melissa McCarthy, Edie Falco, Martha Plimpton and Tina Fey.
In the Outstanding Reality-Competition category the nominees include The Amazing Race,
American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance and Top Chef. Although Survivor missed out, host Jeff Probst is nominated elsewhere.
Other nominees include Downton Abbey, the controversial miniseries The Kennedys, The Killing, Justified and even a nod for Jon Cryer from Two and a Half Men.
Jane Lynch hosts the awards on September 18th.

Good to see Peter Dinklage nominated. He was excellent in Game of Thrones.
With comedy, it’s like, yeah Glee doesn’t really get voted on for comedy.
Shows like
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia which are incredibly funny always get snobbed.
Community deserved a nod also.
30 Rock just gets grandfathered in on nominations now. The show is no where near as good as it once was.
Kyle Chandler! Connie Britton! Friday Night Lights! So great to see such an addictive and innovative show recognised.
The “Friends” cast initially agreed to submit themselves for “Supporting Actor” categories, but then after a few years, they made the (wise) decision to submit themselves for the “Leading” categories. I remember that eyebrows were raised when Eva Longoria was considered a “supporting” actor when DH first started garnering nominations. It’s a shame, though, that the decision by the MF cast has basically locked out worthy nominees like Neil Patrick Harris.
Glee jumped the shark half way through season 1 – came back from the mid-season break a completely different show, and now increasingly relies on stupid theme shows, embarassing caricatures and plotlines that just keep repeating in continual loops.
Hope Steve Carell scores a well-deserved Emmy, disappointed that Amy Ryan (Holly) missed out again in the Outstanding Guest Actress and why oh why do they keep ignoring the most creative, clever, original and funniest comedy on tv, Community?
Wish Seven would find a slot for the third season of Parks and Recreation already…
Gosh I hope FNL wins something. The last season was amazing.
Is it the first time Cat Deeley has been nominated ? She deserves a win
