New gay drama from Russell T. Davies in development

First Queer as Folk then Dr. Who and Torchwood -now Russell T. Davies has new plans.

Screenwriter Russell T. Davies has another gay-themed series in development for Showtime.

A spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that BBC Worldwide Productions is developing a series currently titled, Cucumber.

Davies developed the original Queer as Folk in 2000, which had an even longer life as a US adaptation (pictured).

He also created Torchwood, re-imagined Doctor Who, and created Bob and Rose.

The new project will also revolve around the lives of gay men. But there have been previous reports of a possible series about middle-aged gay men called MGM.

In 2009 Davies told TV Tonight, “I am dying to go back to my own writing, and hopefully something gay. Something with gay men and women more at the forefront of the action. It’s been 10 years since Queer as Folk, the world has changed and I’ve got more things to say.”

Torchwood: Miracle Day airs on UKTV in Australia tomorrow.

  1. Can’t wait for another gay series on TV. The last high quality one (in my opinion) is Queer As Folk.
There’s Glee who has gay characters and romance too, but they are not really the main story, so it doesn’t count much.

  2. Bring it on! I still remember Matt on Melrose Place… whose only function was to be gay bashed and discriminated against.

@chkchk “another” gay tv series? Seriously? Have there really been so many?

  3. Yes chk chk, *another* bloody gay series, because there have been so many lately that sometimes I have to leave the TV off in disgust. Really, just grow up.

Loved QaF so will be keen to check this out, if only for the title.

  4. @chk chk – You have a choice of 15 FTA channels now, so watch something on one of the other 14, if it airs on FTA.
    The title is unfortunate.

  5. Russell is one of TVs greatest off screen talents. He’s a great writer and always willing to push the boundaries.
Should be refreshing after TV’s usual default of hetro themes with a splash of over the top token gay character. See 7’s Winners and Losers.
Bout time the truth was faced- australian government take note- we gays work with you, we live next door, our kids go to school with your kids.
Cant wait ot see what Russell comes up with!

  6. Russell … the wonderful Russell … has been talking about this new Gay series for five years now … I think it is the perfect set up for endless story lines … it is just like real life! Do it Russell, just Do it … been far too long since QAF and we need a new high quality gay drama (I also liked Dante’s Cove and The Lair, but they were filled with “porn star” acting that was really bad … car crash TV!). Go Russell!!!!

  7. @chk chk… when was the last gay TV series to grace our sreens (and if you mention Dantes Cove I will throw water on a baby, so don’t do it)?

I do wonder though, how orginal it can be.

    1. Whilst we would never expect every series to appeal every viewer, I think if you count up the dramas that are dominated by heterosexual characters you’ll have no reason to complain.
