  1. NRL rates better on Foxtel because that’s the only place to get comprehensive coverage of the game and it’s been like that for many years. If you’re a serious NRL fan, you have little choice but to get a sports package with Foxtel, and it’s been like this for years which is how Foxtel were able to grow their viewer base with league fans and as such NRL games take many of the top spots in ratings because of this.

But if you look at AFL, you can get comprehensive coverage on FTA with at least half the games aired on FTA each round including your local footy teams every weekend for SA, WA, NSW and QLD supporters (including live/near-live coverage for matches involving their local teams) plus there are lots of shows like Footy Classified, The Footy Show, AFL Game Day, One Week At A Time, The Game Plan, Before The Game, etc. So there hasn’t been nearly as much incentive to get pay-tv for your AFL fix.

Of course, Foxtel are trying to rectify that by exposing the delayed-coverage tactics of the FTA networks, lack of HD, etc. and providing every H&A match live from next year which is a significant incentive in my eyes and will grab more AFL fans to the medium, especially since there is an established section of the community which are dissatisfied with the FTA networks – any reason to stop watching FTA and they’ll take it.

  2. @Tboner the reason Foxtel paid so much for the AFL was so it could show all games live in order to get more subscribers in the AFL states. Foxtel already have a lot of subs in NSW and QLD therefore wont pay as much for the nrl

  3. Week by week the NRL tops the lists.
With a new Tv deal around the corner i think FTel/Foxsports are again going to have the pay like they did for the AFL
