  1. One can only imagine the potential of the NRL if and when it adds teams to its competition from states that are not in the comp yet. The potential is immense . Not to mention its massive ratings in New Zealand which is forgotten in sports TV impact comparisons. One day I hope the NRL powers that will proactively set out to create new additional teams from Perth (WA Wombats) South Australia(Adelaide Dingos), Queensland(Sunshine Coast Bombers or Dolphins & perhaps a consolidation teams in NSW (Central Coast Bears). Even looking at New Zealand is the go (Wellington Orcas) It is an easy sport to follow on TV and deserves the highest amount of money just on proven performance. The potential is another factor often not discussed.

  2. Sorry my intention was not to get this into an AFL vs NRL thing. I should of phrased my comment differently which i realize after reading it.
I do hope that the NRL get 1 billion or so for the tv rights. Having two football codes in this country get over 1 billion each shows how popular football is.
I am also a member of an NRL and AFL club and attend games and the second part of my comment in my earlier post, if a bigger crowd turned up to NRL games competitive to AFL would that start affecting how many viewers watched. I think it might have some sort of an impact.

  3. @ Ky….I always find it funny that the only thing AFL fans can ever mention, is that they get more poeple to the game. So what??? the way you guys say it, seems to make it out unless you turn up the game, you arn’t allowed to watch it? oh… sorry people from other states watching the game…. you can’t watch cos you didn’t turn up. Sorry people watching the game overseas…sorry you can’t watch the game cos you didn’t turn up.

Sorry people who *Pay* to get pay tv to watch it next year… no sorry you can’t actually watch it either cos you didn’t goto the game. might I add, that except for a few teams in the AFL, you in realistic terms, dont get a big crowds either? and that crowd figured are down 9% for the AFL this year. AFL got 1.53 Billion dollars for *TV rights*…. not *people to goto the game rights*

this isn’t the 1960’s…. people now have multiple TV’s in their home, and can watch sport on TV if they wish. hate to tell you, but money generated by people watching on TV far and away outstrips money generated by people who goto the ground. so if your team makes the grand final for the AFL….don’t be watching it on TV…. cos you didn’t turn up

  4. I imagine they’d be very pleased with that figure for Slide, given that local dramas very rarely figure amongst the top programmes as listed here. Other than “Cloudstreet”, I’m unaware of any other that’s had a figure high enough to make it on to the above charts. Out of curiosity David, what viewing figure does “Spirited” get? Knowing this would give a good comparative measure of the degree of ratings success of the well made “Slide”.

  5. Yeah I agree John. Looking at the list above it is very obvious that foxtel needs the NRL rights badly. Expect a massive deal this time around- perhaps somewhere in the vicinity of 1.4 billion

  6. NRL showing its dominance once again. Foxtel better pay up in the next TV rights deal. NRL also rating great guns on FTA this year, out-pacing the AFL. Should be a great money boost for the NRL.
