Seven steals ratings week from Nine

After starting the week with a share of more than 20% in front of Seven, Nine was still unable to win Week 35 in Total People.

The Seven Network has upstaged Nine’s triumph from The Block by winning Week 35 in Total People.

The Block: Winner Announced was the single biggest audience of the year on 3,289,000 viewers. Together with Underbelly: Razor, Nine started out with a 20% share above Seven. With such a stellar result it wasn’t so much Nine’s week to win -it was Nine’s not to lose.

Seven clawed back share with the return of Packed to the Rafters on Tuesday. Nine’s Wednesday night line-up let it down, leaving it at just 0.6% ahead of Seven. It then lost Thursday, a night it frequently wins over Seven. The final two nights sealed its fate.

At least with advertisers, Nine can be more cheerful. It did win the week in the three key demos: 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

It also finished in front of Seven in primary channels for the second week in a row. But at just 0.1% even that could change when Timeshifted numbers are in.

TEN has another dreadful week, caught in the crossfire of its two rivals. It landed below the 20% mark and battled with ABC1 in primary channels.

  1. @Secret Squirrel.. it is big news. When is the last time somone had that lead and got headed? As @ja’mie said without that lead in what will happen this week?

  2. Agreed a Fresh New 7pm Show for Nine is a must for the remainder of the year when the block isn’t shown.Using American Sitcoms which can now be bought on box set at Kmart isn’t the answer.

Anything has to be better than more 2.5 men or Big Bang Theory.I would like to know whatever happened to Nine’s idea of a News Chat Show at 7pm with Karl and Leila when Charlie sheen got fired off the set of 2.5 men.

  3. @Secret Squïrrel

Yes that is true however I have had a look at the demos for the week and Nine solely won them because of the huge share they had on Sunday night. Seven won most of them throughout the week but couldn’t claw them back because of Sunday. This week will be a totally different story. I expect Seven to win the week as a whole by more than 6% and main channels by at least 2%. Nine have nothing. Their scheduling is ordinary, their digital channels are ordinary and well there isn’t much worthwhile watching on the network.

I believe Seven will become the first network to win every single ratings week for a year. There isn’t really much stopping them. Their only hiccup could come with the Rugby World Cup but isn’t it a fact that they are not “officially counted” because they don’t happen every year. A bit like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games broadcasts? OR has this changed now.

  4. Remember, while total people is good for headlining publicity material intended for the masses, it’s the demos which matter as far as the business goes.

Anyway, I don’t think Nine not winning the week is the big news – c’mon, just about everybody bar a couple of Nine tragics was saying that they weren’t going to hold on to Sunday’s lead. No, the real story is what is going on with Ten? They were giving Nine a run for their money earlier in the year but they can’t even make a dent in the demo that they supposedly target.

One did so bad that it didn’t even make the list! Ok, it’s prob just been accidentally left off, but it needs to get a stable lineup and promote its new identity better (whatever that is). Sticking Burn Notice on there seems like a good fit but I wouldn’t mind betting that One is a blind-spot for a lot of people who still view it as a sports channel. I thought that the rerun of 24 was going to better than it did. Maybe the new identity needs more time to establish itself but how much?

  5. 2012 would be much stronger for Seven and Nine is in the same situation as what Seven was in 2003/2004…maybe a relaunch could improve ratings and will Seven bring back “The One To Watch” for the 2012 ratings season?

  6. This result signals just how much Nine are struggling. They don’t even have anything else up their sleeve to win a week in the foreseeable future – Underbelly alone just won’t do it.

Seriously, Nine must have given up for the rest of this year with crap like Same Name in its line-up for this week – that barely passes for pay-TV quality.

Best thing to do is focus on delivering a fresh line-up for the whole of next year – a new 7pm show besides The Block is a priority.

  7. @tmorgan, the issue with the multichannels is that Ten’s offerings arent that dis similar to their main channel, so they are robbing Peter and pay Paul and rather than bring more eyes to the network, they are just cannibilizing one audience from the other, 9 and 7 on the other hand have a much more solid direction for their multichannels Go! being the young people channel, Gem the female friendly, 7Mate the male friendly and 7TWO with its everything is British lol, these are in marked contrast to One (a mish mash of everything) and Eleven – young people channel, so 10 basically shoots itself in the foot but not having defined enough and going with the silly Sports branding for One when it was launched.

  8. After sampling two hours of Underbelly last week and being warned about the graphic violence tonight I will be fascinated to see how Razor rates tonight. I think if Seven offered up a great alternative the UB veneer woud crack. Like most of what Nine is doing this year it has gone for a short term spike in ratings at the expense of brand integrity. What does Nine’s brand stand for today – lies, misogyny, graphic violence, salacious sex scenes on a Sunday at 830 – honestly I’m not a prude, I’m just observing there used to be standards and now there are none.I’ve said this before but Tim Worner seems scared of programming 830 Sunday night and I just don’t get that. If Nine can win Sunday night with Australian drama so can Seven. Michael Healy’s got the spine for his job – just no taste, and no ability to recognise how much his audience has changed – so he’s driven them all away. Nine get them back for an hout or so, but then it all falls apart again. Heads wont roll but it’s increasingly obvious they should.

  9. Don’t forget that Nine won the first 3 weeks of 2011 however they were during the summer and not during the 40 week rating period but should still count as weekly wins. During this time they won a very rare week in Perth and 2 weeks in Adelaide. The Nine Network cannot fix Adelaide and Perth stations as they are owned by Win who should be working their magic. If Nine owned these stations maybe they could have won the week. Who knows? Nine will win another week in 2011 even if it is late December with a massive share on Christmas Eve. Nine should put on some new shows and return old favs to get a bigger audience. There is still hope and they can pull it off but the question is will they?

Seven’s drama double on Tuesday was their highlight. Drama is what I feel 7 do best. I enjoy Rafters and Winners and Losers so they should keep them strong, not overdo it and keep up the good work in that department.

  10. Nine still won demos, primary channels and in Sydney and Brisbane. The over 55s love 7 to the point they get them over the line and they really love 7two. First time seing 7mate beat Go. The digtial channels are letting 9 down and should be relaunched with new reliable programming. Big Bang Theory can clutter Go’s schedule but not 9’s. New eps can air in a few weeks but constant repeats has been a disaster. Nine can fix the schedule with new shows in a month with new CSI, 2 1/2 Men and soon. Adelaide and Perth let 9 down even more. Win should be doing something to fix that. At least the Tri-Nation rugby aired on Gem in AFL states.

10 in trouble. I still enjoy their programs but not as much. Renovators is seeing some improvement and I enjoy it. TBYG should be on Tuesday night and good to see new Modern Family. October will be better with new episodes of Glee, Modern Family, NCIS, NCIS LA and Junior Masterchef. Eleven is pulling Ten up but One still needs improvement

Nine can continue to win Sydney and Brisbane due to big NRL figures on Friday and good figures for Nine News. Demos are still likely but total people, I don’t think so. Maybe when the NRL finals are on there is a chance of a win.

  11. David – I read somewhere that timeshifting generally benefits Seven. Is that true? Any idea whether those primary channel figures changed Nine’s narrow victory last week? At least Nine can say its primary channel won two ratings weeks this year; imagine if even that gets taken away because of timeshifting!

  12. Once again, Nine fail.
    Once again, Seven are victorious.
Nine’s multichannels are by and large rubbish.
Seven’s are, in comparison, more consistent with their programming and attract a much broader crowd.

Nine will not win a week this year – at least not until summer

  13. It takes considerable incompetance to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when you start the week with such a commanding lead. The so called key demos are changing their viewing behaviour at a pace that both the advertisers and tv execs are not keeping up with. Avoiding crappy adverts is a key goal of the majority of 18-49s and technology is delivering this.

Well done 9 your little flourish is over, better luck next year.

  14. Absolutely fantastic result for Seven. They stuck to their game and it won them the week. Saturday nights movie result was also brilliant. Seven are going to gave a massive share this week. I can just tell. Nine won’t win a week this year. They had the biggest possible chance but their programming let them down for not being consistent. Well done Seven. You deserve it and Nine deserves everything they get.

  15. Thats probably the greatest comeback in tv rating history. Its actually quite funny and nine must be scratching there heads wondering what they have to do just to win a week.

But smart move by 7 to bring back rafters and have the finale of winners & losers straight after. Also thankyou 7 for having the guts to take of rafters for a few months and replacing it with another great aussie drama.

Interesting to be around the ch9 water cooler tomorrow.

  16. Believe it or not, the multichannels are hurting the networks… bad. TEN used to get 20%, now its 12%.
All the networks are down in ratings so now its a case of lots of quantity but litte quality. I would rather have 1 exceptionally good network with 100% Aussie shows at the highest quality, than 15 channels showing poorly done reno shows, cheesy dramas and American garbage.
Nine, once again you have let me down. At least you won the demos.
