Survivor: Ozzy’s mad gamble

Ozzy throws himself under the bus. If it pays off, it will go down as one of the brashest moves in Survivor history.

If it pays off, it will go down as one of the brashest moves in Survivor history.

Last night on the long-running reality series Ozzy volunteered to be voted out from Tribal Council and be sent to Redemption Island. He even gave up his secret Immunity Idol to throw himself under the bus.

There he hopes to defeat previously-eliminated contestant Christine, from rival tribe Upolu whose Redemption battles have been diminishing the numbers from the Savaii tribe.

The bold plan is to try and even up the tribal numbers ahead of an expected merge.

But it hinges on several assumptions:

– that Ozzy can beat Christine in a one on one duel.
– that he can beat any future contestants sent to Redemption Island.
– that a merge between the two tribes is imminent.
– that teammate Cochrane, whom he gave the Immunity Idol to, will give it back to him.
– that something else unforseen doesn’t throw the plan into disarray.

Ozzy, who is playing Survivor for the third time, has always been a bit of a hero (most of the time backed up with triumphs). Can he pull it off this time?

The odds are stacked against him….

  1. Agree. Wasted move by Ozzy. If he had thought it out – it would strengthen the tribe to switch Christine for Cochran. Good intentions; bad strategy. Cochran does not ‘try’ at anything … he doesn’t know or care to ‘try’. Christine is the one who has earned it so far. The excessive praying is a major turnoff.

  2. @ Kylie i’m with you, the religious trype was too much. If I was a religous person, i’d be praying for a lightning bolt to strike them all down 🙂

Enjoying the series though and it would be great to see Ozzy pull off this move just because it’s so innovative.

  3. They payed way too much attention to the religious ridiculousness last night, it was totally unbearable. I also muted it. I really hope Christine comes back and helped eliminate the Upolu tribe.

  4. Why didn’t the tribes immediately vote off Ozzy and Coach when they had the chance? I would prefer new people each season. Ozzy’s ego knows no bounds. What he has done is not necessary. I hope his tribe is smart enough to plot his downfall. He has been a great player in the past only in the physical aspects of the game. Strategically he has been stupid and it doesn’t look like he is any smarter this time.

  5. A stupid, needless, highly entertaining play. If nothing else, I am glad Cochran gets another three days in the game – in fact, if the merge is indeed next episode (and I think it is) then Cochran is almost a lock for the final five or so. Who wants to vote out the weakest player in the game come the merge?

Ozzy will almost certainly beat Christine – if nothing else, her edit has been horribly one dimensional, suggesting her return is unlikely – but I don’t think Ozzy has a chance in hell of winning. My money is on Jim at the moment.

  6. Jeff tweeted that there is no rule that Ozzy had to give up the immunity idol when he left the game, so he could have taken it with him to Redemption Island!

  7. I think Ozzy is just indulging in a hero fantasy. Since Christine hates her old tribe so much, there’s not a lot of point in putting everything on the line to defeat her since she’ll presumably want to switch teams anyway. Then again, I’m glad he did it because 1) it makes for an entertaining episode, and 2) it benefits Cochran and he’s who I’m going for.

  8. Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy, Dumb, dumb, dumb…. Why ‘lend’ the Idol to Cochrane. He is the only one in his tribe who needs the immunity idol badly. Cochtrain would be a fool to hand it back. Merge or no merge.

  9. Would have been nice to see it, but I recorded Survivor and watched American Horror Story, and Nine ran overtime and the recording stopped during tribal council. Thanks Nine. How stupid of me to do the right thing and watch it on tv. Won’t again.

That said, bold move by Ozzy. Hope it works out, but Christine would have jumped on their side anyway so should have just sent Cochrane. Can’t stand coach or Brandon, anytime they start talking, especially that god nonsense i just fast forward.

  10. They’ve completely overlooked the fact this is a needless risk as Christine’s bitterness towards her next tribe has always been obvious. She was always likely to side with Savaii if she made it back to the game.

And Redemption Island has been a real waste of time. Let’s get back to 2 challenges per episode – reward and immunity.

  11. Yeah interesting play. Ozzie’s always been a challenge master, and it may be in his best interests to keep his destiny in his own hands, although risky of course. Even if the plan succeeds though, the Upolu guys seem a tighter 6 and a guy like Cochran might find it easy to switch over his loyalty to them since he knows he’s always on the bottom of the pile in his tribe.
