Tasmanian Devil telemovie -filmed in Canada

A US sci-fi telemovie see British Columbia double as a Tasmanian national park.

A US sci-fi telemovie set in Tasmania will begin filming later this month -in Canada.

Tasmanian Devil is a telemovie which centers on base jumpers in a remote Tasmanian national park who are pursued by “grizzly bear-sized Tasmanian Devils” who protect the land from intruders.

To be produced for the Syfy Channel in the US it will star Kenneth Mitchell from Jericho, former Wonder Years actress Danica McKellar and US Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno.

Producers Vesuvius Productions begin shooting in British Columbia this month and the telemovie will air on the Syfy Channel in 2012.

  1. Stop whinging! Until the ridiculously huge charges for permits for filming Australian locations are abolished, we have absolutely no right to question why productions are being shot elsewhere.

  2. If this brings some light to the plight of Tasmanian Devils to an audience that wouldn’t be expected to know much of it, then this movie will be worth its budget.

  3. It’s a Syfy telemovie. Canada imitating Tasmania with impossibly large Tassie devils is the least of its problems. We can only hope it’s as good as “Mongolian Death Worm”, and not as bad as Hallmark’s “Supernova”.

And it’s not like there haven’t been plenty of cheap movies & TV shows filmed in Australia but set in America – Daybreakers, Knowing, Flipper, etc.

  4. Well, we can’t really complain, especially considering how many times movies set in America are filmed here. Anyway, it would be impractical for all movies to be filmed in precisely the location they’re set (I can’t see them filming The Kite Runner in Afghanistan, just as an example…)

Since it’s a sci fi production it doesn’t sound like the huge devils will be that close to reality anyway.

  5. Is it really news worthy that a film is shot somewhere other than where it is set? I don’t hear any complaints when film or television is shot here when the story has it set someplace else. Besides has anyone ever seen any of these Syfy Channel movies? It isn’t exactly quality stuff.

  6. @ Jezza – most American filming takes place in Canada due to its reduced costs. So what if its based on Australia and filmed elsewhere. An example is Twilight which is based on an American town yet is filmed in Canada. Be glad that no body these days don’t read the credits so they won’t know where the movie was filmed.

  7. I’m more concerned that the world will think that Tassie Devils are man-eating monsters that should be killed rather than an endangered species! Hollywood often films things in places other than where they claim to be – that’s old news.

  8. I think it’s disgraceful that a telemovie about the Tasmanian devil was chosen to be set in Canada! What the heck would Canadians know about it? If I was a filmmaker, I’d highly recommend actually bringing the telemovie to Tasmania. It’d bring some good tourism dollars to the state like The Hunter would have. The Tasmanian devil facial tumour stories have gained a lot of attention here in Tassie, so the film no doubt should have been set here. Honestly, if a movie is not set in the home town/state/country central to the story, then it’s not worth filming at all.

  9. I really like the sound of this but i’m sure it will cop a bit of flack for the Canada thing !

So before we get too carried away and narky about it, in Sydney it is New York with the Great Gatzby. We have also seen Paris in Moulin Rouge and the list goes on and on and on (had to get an ABBA plug in there some how)

    LOL
