Report: Underbelly 2012 in Queensland

Underbelly 2012 will reportedly be set against a backdrop of Queensland's Fitzgerald inquiry in the 1980s.

Underbelly 2012 will be set against a backdrop of Queensland’s Fitzgerald inquiry in the 1980s, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The inquiry was established following police corruption articles by reporter Phil Dickie and a Four Corners television report by Chris Masters. It revealed top policemen and politicians were linked to brothels and gambling dens, eventually bringing down Queensland’s longest-serving premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

In 1991 Bjelke-Petersen also faced a criminal trial for perjury which resulted in a hung jury -itself the subject of an ABC dramatisation, Joh’s Jury.

The Queensland saga has been a possibility for some time, previously rumoured for Underbelly 2011.

A Channel 9 spokeswoman said, “The Fitzgerald inquiry is one of the contenders but there are at least two other Australian crime stories being considered as well.”

This concurs with recent comments by Screentime’s Des Monaghan who has said there are three possible options for the next series, two of which are related to the first series.

“There are a few things standing in our way,” Monaghan recently said. “So we have other options. It’s a bit of a wait-and-see situation.”

Nine is also tipped to screen the NZ series of Underbelly next year.

  1. If this is true I might actually watch it just out of pure Queenslander pride. I haven’t watched a single other Underbelly series due to lack of interest in Melbourne and Sydney stories…

  2. I would watch this one but i live in brisbane and remember a bit about this story but feel it could be not so much boring but just not interesting enough for those outside of Queensland

  3. Another 13 part series would be great in 2012 just as long as it is great with strong actors, quality scripting and realistic sets. At least this series hasn’t been be an overload with 30+ episodes a year or taken off after a few episodes like Rafters this year.

Question is, will this be as good as the first year or this year’s Razor? Hope so!

  4. Great story that needs to be told. Who can forget 4 Corners report ‘The Moonlight State” that aired so many years ago, exposing what had been going on for so long. Brilliant stuff.
