Seven Network charged over Sunday Night story

Seven and Sunday Night reporter Rahni Sadler have been charged after interviewing a prisoner without permission of NT Corrective Services.

A Sunday Night interview with Peter Falconio’s murderer Bradley John Murdoch has resulted in charges being laid by the Northern Territory police.

The Seven Network, reporter Rahni Sadler and former lawyer Andrew Fraser have all been charged for interviewing a prisoner without the consent of the NT Corrective Services executive director.

In July last year Sunday Night aired an interview with Murdoch that questioned a 2005 conviction over the 2001 murder of the British tourist.

Voice recordings of Murdoch, who turned suspicion back onto Joanne Lees, were provided via phone conversations with his lawyer Andrew Fraser.

Fraser said he was 100% convinced that Falconio was still alive after four witnesses had claimed to have seen him -but he had spoken to none.

Media Watch also criticised the story.

In a statement, Seven said: “Seven confirms that proceedings have been commenced against it and one of its journalists by the Northern Territory Department of Corrective Services.

“As the matter is before the Court, Seven is not able to make any comment other than confirming that the matter will be defended.”

In unrelated news, Fraser was also the subject of TV1′s miniseries Killing Time starring David Wenham.

The matter is adjourned until April 4th.
