Never Mind the Buzzcocks to premiere in Australia

UK music quiz show often referenced as a forerunner to Spicks and Specks, will finally air in Australia.

Long-running UK music quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, often referenced as a forerunner to Spicks and Specks, will finally air in Australia on UKTV.

It will premiere in July.

Deirdre Brennan, GM and Director of Channels & Branded Services, BBC Worldwide Australasia said, “We have received countless requests from our audience to bring Never Mind the Buzzcocks to Australia so I’m especially delighted to announce this will premiere in July. This series is revered in Britain and is a great addition to the Monday night comedy line-up.”

The Pay TV channel has also announced new drama and entertainment content for 2012 including Going for Gold, We’ll Take Manhattan, One Night, Inside Men, Falcón.

Starring Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, Going for Gold (1 x 90) is the powerful and uplifting story of how two men from very different backgrounds triumphed against the odds, capturing Olympic Gold in the double sculling and embodying the battling spirit of the 1948 London games. This is the first of three dramas with a London theme.

Set over one hot summer’s night when nerves are frayed and tensions ride high, One Night (4 x 50) follows four very ordinary, but very different people whose fates become intertwined by a seemingly trivial event…with far reaching consequences.

It’s winter 1962, and the cockney photographer David Bailey and unknown model Jean Shrimpton (played by Doctor Who’s side kick Karen Gillan) are sent to New York for a prestigious Vogue photo shoot. The 90 minute drama, We’ll Take Manhattan tells the story of a wild week, their love affair, terrible fights with their fashion editor – and how two young people with no such intention happened to change the world of fashion forever.

The Spanish city of Seville is the exquisite backdrop for this high-octane drama Falcón based on acclaimed crime writer Robert Wilson’s series of international bestselling novels featuring flawed hero Javier Falcón, played by Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy).

The Guardian called it, “A tense, knuckle-gnawing thriller”. Inside Men (4 x 50) is a gripping drama about three employees of a security depot who plan and execute a multimillion pound cash heist. When manager John catches two of his workers stealing money from the vault, they expect the worst. John convinces them to put back the money. After all, why risk everything for just £50,000 when there is £170 million pounds waiting to be taken? Inside Men will be part of the Crime and Justice season in October.

Often described as the funniest show on British TV, Never Mind The Buzzcocks is a comedy pop music quiz, with an emphasis on the comedy rather than correct answers. This long-running hit show first premiered in 1996 engaging viewers with its unique blend of laughs, personal insults and brutal comedy.

Two teams – led by regular team captains Phil Jupitus and Noel Fielding – and guest competitors from the worlds of music, TV and comedy, battle it out each week to determine who has the best music knowledge. UKTV will screen series 24, produced in 2010 – 2011.

Deirdre Brennan, GM and Director of Channels & Branded Services, BBC Worldwide Australasia said, “These new titles demonstrate the incredible breadth and premium quality of British programming available exclusively on UKTV. The unique way the channel celebrates British creative excellence through curating and packaging new shows with our fan favourites ensures UKTV is the ‘Best @ British’.”

Going for Gold, One Night and Inside Men have been acquired from BBC Worldwide; We’ll Take Manhattan from Shine International, Falcón, from ITV International and Never Mind the Buzzcocks from Fremantle Media.
