New Doctor Who companion announced

Some Spoilers: 25 year old Jenna-Louise Coleman has been named as the new companion to Matt Smith's Doctor Who.

Some Spoilers: Jenna-Louise Coleman, who has appeared in Emmerdale, Waterloo Road and in the upcoming Titanic miniseries, has been named as the new companion to Matt Smith’s Doctor Who.

Coleman, 25, joins the show in the sixth episode this year, due to be shown in the UK at Christmas.

Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will depart in episode five, with Steven Moffat saying: “Amy and Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time.”

This year there will be six new episodes, and eight more to air next year, as part of the show’s 50th anniversary.

Writer Steven Moffat said of Coleman, “It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together, we knew we had our girl. She’s funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the TARDIS.

“It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.

“This time we’re moving closer to stand-alone stories. At this point, we’re not planning any two-parters. So, every week is going to be like a different mad movie.

“We went quite ‘arc’ last time and we’re going stand-alone this time around. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t those things creeping in. You’ve got to find a way to make the last episode special, and by God that worked ratings-wise last year. We don’t want to abandon that idea.”

  1. Fast talking is nothing new, it’s was a staple in the early days of movies and more recently on TV Gilmore Girls was renowned for it’s fast talking characters. Watch many other shows now and they have just as fast paced dialog, getting out as many word they can in the scene.

I like that the new companion will keep the Doctor on his toes.

BTW the next seasons trailer has just been released, check youtube.

  2. “It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen.”….Was Not impressed by that sentence…Why is this happening more and more and more in TV now? even movies? are fast talking men and women somehow funnier? more attractive? to me they are the opposite, dribblers who if they keep talking might eventually say something interesting…

  3. The only reason the Doctor travels with a companion is one of convenience for the writers. It allows them to feed information to the audience by having the companion ask all the who, what, when, where and why questions. (Much as Dr.Watson does for Sherlock Holmes).
And since 1971 the standard has been for a single companion, female, attractive and from the “now” to allows audiences to relate, and basically because it’s good for ratings. On occasion the formula was changed, but eventually it always changed back. It why so many tv shows use it.

  4. @Shelley – aside from the fact that the Doctor has had male companions (Adam, Jack, Mickey, Wilf, Rory…), the reason that there isn’t a male companion is because the show would have two male leads. It’s a nicer balance to have a male and female lead, and it appeals to a wider audience.

  5. Oh dear, here we go again … I will miss Amy and Rory, I really like that there is no room for the Doctor to be interested in his companion romantically … all that business with Rose was a real bore! Better not happen again!

  6. She looks gorgeous!!

I’ve never watched an episode of Doctor Who before but I’m inclined to start when this hottie debuts!!

I’m going to check out the Titanic miniseries now as well!! Epic!!!

  7. It’s a young actor playing the doctor so it’s logical to have a young companion. Who cares? Personally I’ve never understood why the Doctor couldn’t have a male companion…

  8. You do know that the Victorian-era, lesbian, Silurian was played by a young, attractive female, right? And Catherine Tate is relatively young, quite attractive and a female…Nothing’s changed since 1963 but people are still expecting Maggie Smith to be cast…

As for Jenna, we know nothing about her character, but everyone has already determined exactly who she is…

  9. Someone at another forum found the BBC’s timing of this annoucement to be cynical considering that she will be seen (in the UK) in the Titanic mini-series on rival ITV.

Other than that can’t wait to see her.

  10. Eh. Another young, attractive, female compaion. I know they’re an “essential” element of Doctor Who, but my favourite companion to date was Donna Noble.

It would have been great to see the Victorian-era, lesbian, Silurian return as the companion. Or at least her maid/sidekick/lover as the companion.

Still, the mystery around “who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her” sounds like it has potential.
