Airdate: Girls

In between Gossip Girl and Sex & The City there is HBO's Girls.

Next month Showcase premieres HBO’s Girls, focusing on a group of 20-something women and their adventures after they move to New York.

The series comes from writer, director and actress Lena Dunham, and comedy veterans Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner. It seeks to address an audience in between Gossip Girl and Sex and the City.

The series features Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver, Chris Abbott, Alex Karpovsky, Becky Ann Baker, Peter Scolari, Christina Kirk, Kathryn Hahn and James Legros.

Girls premiered in the US last week.

Two years out of liberal arts school, Hannah (Dunham) believes she has the talent to be a successful writer, and though she has yet to complete her memoir (she has to live it first), her parents cut her off financially without warning. Further complicating things is her unrequited passion for eccentric actor Adam (Adam Driver), with whom she occasionally has sex (when he can be bothered to respond to her text messages).

As the harsh reality of rent and bills looms, Hannah leans on her very-put-together best friend Marnie (Allison Williams), who has a real job at an art gallery and an even realer boyfriend (neither of which she can admit she might not love). Meanwhile, their gorgeous British friend Jessa (Jemima Kirke), who has travelled to as many different countries as she’s had boyfriends, moves in with Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), her naïve younger cousin with “Sex and the City” lifestyle aspirations.

Over the course of the series, the four girls try to figure out what they want – from life, boys, themselves and each other. The answers aren’t always clear, but the search is profoundly relatable and infinitely amusing.

8:30pm Monday May 28 on Showcase.

  1. I just YouTube-d the trailer’s and they definitely don’t look interesting. I love SATC, and I don’t mind occasionally watching GG, but this looks like a poorly made Australian spin off. Definitely won’t be watching. However, I can’t wait for Newsroom to start after TV Tonight posted the trailer the other month!

  2. Any news about when we’ll be getting HBO’s other new comedy, Veep? It’s from Armando Iannucci, the genius behind Alan Partridge and The Thick Of It, and if we don’t get it quickly I might have to obtain it through…..other means.
