Lithuania to produce Mother and Son

Some comedies withstand the test of time, and Mother & Son gets a new lease of life in Lithania.

It remains the finest sitcom Australia has ever produced, and now Mother and Son is to have a local version produced in the tiny Euro-nation of Lithuania.

Famously starring Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald, the series has already spawned local adaptations in Chile, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey, Greece and the UK, where it aired on BBC1 in 1997/98 for two seasons under the title Keeping Mum. A US version was also due to be realised but has never happened.

A 16 part season for Lithuania is in production now, with a broadcast date set for September 2012.

Jurgis Jefremovas, director of programming at TV3, said: “Mother and Son will be the very first local series based on an acquired script in our market. TV3 is eager to start a new trend by acquiring this hit from down-under and adapting it for local viewers.”

The original series was entirely written by the terribly brilliant Geoffrey Atherden.

  1. Yes, an extraordinarily well-written, -acted, and -directed comedy. Once every few years I nearly pour milk into the sugarbowl instead of my cup, and Maggie always pops into mind.

  2. Southpatt – I know you meant “oranges”, and that’s the one scene/episode that stands out for me too. An amazingly funny and heart-touching at times show, Garry & Ruth were so good together.
