‘Other’ Cliff Young project shuffles away

This town ain't big enough for two Cliff Young dramas, so one shuffles off into the distance.

A second Cliff Young drama project starring Garry McDonald has been shelved after backers pulled out of a feature film, entitled Back of Nowhere.

Seven was one of the backers of the film, based on the autobiography of marathon runner Cliff Young.

But the greenlight for the ABC telemovie Cliffy, starring Kevin Harrington (pictured), meant there wasn’t enough room for two.

The Australian reports Seven was agreeable to holding back a television screening of Back of Nowhere if ABC held back screening Cliffy until after theirs had enjoyed a cinema release.

Film producer Bryan Lowe said, “We believe the theatrical exposure would have indirectly raised awareness for the ABC telemovie broadcast”. But according to Mr Lowe the ABC rejected the producers’ release Strategy.

The film was due to shoot in South Australia this winter, with the backing, too, of the SA Film Corporation.

Filming on Cliffy starts in mid April across Albury-Wodonga and regional Victoria for screening on ABC1 next year.
