Colette Mann returns to Neighbours

Colette Mann returns to Ramsay Street, 17 years after she first appeared on the show.

Actress Colette Mann returns to Ramsay Street tonight in an on-going guest role, 17 years after she first appeared on the show.

She returns as Sheila Canning, grandmother of Kyle (Christopher Milligan), making a surprise visit to see her favourite grandson. It’s also been a long time since the soap has cast a senior maternal in an on-going role.

Mann first stepped into Neighbours after Caroline Gillmer fell ill in 1995, for an eight week run.

Of course she is no stranger to the show’s Nunawading studio which doubled as Wentworth Detention Centre when she famously playing Doreen Anderson on Prisoner.

Neighbours airs 6:30pm weeknights on ELEVEN.

  1. I was a big Colette fan! Many years ago, I think I was about 12, I hadn’t seen her on Prisoner (Mum wouldn’t let me watch that) but she was a regular on Hey Hey It’s Saturday and had done some temporary gigs like hosting the Tattslotto draw (who knew that someone could make Tattslotto funny??). I sent her a letter telling her how funny she was and hoped she’d keep doing TV. She sent me back a lovely reply and said with much excitement that thanks to viewer feedback like mine she’d just been renewed with Hey Hey for another 13 weeks. Being 12 at the time, I was very thrilled. I’ve still got the letter somewhere.

Just a pity that Eleven doesn’t do any ‘catch up’ screening of Neighbours because I’m never home at 6.30. I’ll have to try and watch it online just to see her.

  2. I don’t watch Neighbours, but re-experiencing Prisoner again, i forgot how wonderful Collette was in the role of Doreen. She was upstaged by Sheila Florance and Val Lehman, but Doreen was such a vivid and at times complex character – childlike, traumatised and crafty – but sweet and needy. From memory she may have been Logie nominated. Her performance was heartbreaking at times. Where does that sort of writing and performance show in 2012? Offspring & Rafters – they are shorter run series. The immense production of A country practice and Prisoner of 2 hours a week of drama gave so much scope for actors like Colette and Judith McGrath etc etc to shine. Nice to see her still treading the boards!
