Nine appoints Sydney News Director

Nine has appointed Simon Hobbs as its new Sydney News Director, after Darren Wick was promoted to Director of News and Current Affairs.

Nine has appointed Simon Hobbs as its new Sydney News Director, after Darren Wick was promoted to Director of News and Current Affairs in February.

The Australian reports Hobbs has been in New York for the past five years, at NBC and Discovery but before spent 13 years as a senior producer on A Current Affair, chief of staff on Today and supervising producer on Nine News.

“He will inject new ideas, energy and edge to our bulletins. But above all else, he understands that the strength of Nine News is about trust, accuracy and, most importantly, people,” said Wick.

Nine News is now dominant in Sydney and Melbourne -it hasn’t lost a week all year in the fickle Melbourne market.

But Seven remains in front nationally due to its strength in Adelaide and Perth.

    1. Ask any news dept in Melbourne and they will tell you the city is historically fickle. Some nights Seven, some nights Nine without much logic. This differs markedly from other cities where one usually dominates long-term. Nine is having its best run in a long time.
