US actor George Lindsey, best known as Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, has died, aged 83.

US actor George Lindsey, best known as Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, has died, aged 83.

Lindsey spent some 30 years on television, including as the grinning service station attendant on The Andy Griffith Show and its successor, Mayberry RFD from 1964 to 1971 plus other roles on Hee Haw until 1992.

He joined The Andy Griffith Show in 1964 as the cousin of Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors who had left the show.

“America has grown up with me,” he once said in an interview. “Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol’ Goober.”

His other credits included roles on Gunsmoke, MASH, CHIPs, The Rifleman, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Twilight Zone plus Cannonball Run II, Take This Job and Shove It, The Aristocats, The Rescuers and Robin Hood.

Andy Griffith, 85, said in a statement that accompanied the Lindsay family’s announcement of the death, “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit.”
