Bob Katter fires up over gay marriage question on The Circle

Video: "I'm not talking about it. I've said I won't talk about it!" rants an angry Bob Katter on The Circle today.

It was a heated moment this morning on The Circle when Bob Katter refused to answer questions on whether he supported gay marriage or not, while being interviewed for his new book.

“I’m not talking about it. I’ve said I won’t talk about it, no-one’s ever raised it with me and I’m certainly not giving you no status, or your question any status by answering it!” he told Gorgi Coghlan.

And it all went downhill from there.

Pick up from 6:30mins.

  1. Just a theory, but perhaps the reason Bob Katter is struggling to explain his stance on gay marriage is because he is in denial about his own sexuality. Bob Katter “doth protest too much”.

  2. The guy has no chance, 3 woman having a go at him… hardly got a word in … and Steve just sat there and didnt say a word… A very good reason i give the circle a wide berth.

  3. Is anyone really surprised by this?

Katter comes from the state that has given us racists and homophobes like Joh Bjelke, Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer.

And Katter is either senile or dilustional if he claims that noone has brought up gay marriage with him.

What the heck is being discussed at the family dinner table when his half brother shows up???

And didn’t Katter claim that there were no homosexuals in his electorate?

Queensland is fast reverting to the bad old days of Joh and Flo and I don”t recommend my overseas friends travelling there anymore.

Heck – I won’t be travelling there in the future as long as Newman, Hanson, Katter and Palmer are polluting the state.

  4. Katter has a bad case of RDS (Revelance Deficit Syndrome). He stated over & over that this issue has never been raised with him. What did he think was happening? It was being raised on the show Turkey! What a homophobic dill. I feel sorry for his electrate, his family and anyone who gets stuck in an elevator with the misanthrop. Could someone buy Katter a Dictionary (with pictures) and have the words “equality & tolerance” circled please? Then put him in the naughty corner…..

  5. I don’t believe a word of it, he has thought about it, it has been raised with him and he does have an opinion. But he cannot come up with an explanation of why he wants to deny equality to homosexuals so he lies in an attempt to avoid the question. He is a representative of the people so we have a right to know his opinions in order to decide whether to vote for him as our representative. Only straight farmer suicides matter apparently, does he withdraw his condolences to the family if he finds out they committed suicide because they struggled with their sexuality.

  6. He is an elected polititian and was asked a question on a very topical subject. If he doesn’t support it just say it. Julia has. To be fair, Bob comes from a very tough outback area and has a city based gay half brother, so for him it is a sensitive complicated subject. Most of us are not in that position.

  7. The poms had the Monster Raving Loony Party, we’ve got him. Michelle was really impressive with her tact and gave him every opportunity to retain some dignity which he squandered in typical fashion.

  8. Is “nobody’s raised it with me before” even an excuse not to answer a question? We’re raising it now, Bob. Just answer the question like an adult and move on. But it is very telling that he couldn’t think of an answer that he believed wouldn’t make him look prejudiced or bigoted.

  9. Also, he does make a point about farmers comitting suicide and not getting attention, but that doesn’t mean that gay people, who also struggle with their homosexuality, especially young people whose peers, government and people like this tell them that they aren’t worthy of marriage and a normal life.

We do pay attention to gay marriage, but mainly because it’s easier to fix. Depression gets attention, but attention doesn’t help these people quickly.

Also, that’s the first time he’s been asked that? Proof here that it isn’t: youtube.com/watch?v=NpXhzIA_OCc

  10. Kinda going to play devils advocate here.
I really do think that he believes he was unfairly treated after that ad campaign, and that if he had said what his true thoughts on it were, it would’ve been the only thing on the newspaper cover. If he had answered “No, I don’t support it for …. reasons”, then they would’ve continued with questions about his brother and such.

But the problem is that he tried to blame that ad on other people, and then admitted he pressed go on it. He also just acted like a child.

I don’t agree with his beliefs, and strongly disagree with them, but i do see why he feared the question.

I’m sure he could be a nice man at times, but things like this just remind me how quickly he can snap. It was an easy question.

  11. How can those “Celebrities” lower themselves to even speak to this racist, homophobic moron. What does it say about the people who actually voted for him an election…Shame, Shame, Shame…Or as someone once said “Please Explain”

  12. It is no question that Bob Katter is a complete tool and a person in his position should have just answered the question honestly without getting so flustered and aggressive

However it’s becoming such a huge deal if someone is against gay marriage even though all they are doing is agreeing with what is currently Australian law

Look at Margaret Court for example

Anyway all I am trying to say is that people should be able to form their own opinion on this topic without being ridiculed so severely

In the end the law will pass anyway and people will realise that it wasn’t such a scary change afterall

  13. That was hardly an ambush question! Especially for someone who gets more than their share of media attention for their opinions. He could have simply answered the question respectfully and moved on but his “no talk/no interest” stance made him look childish and brought more attention to it.

  14. The hosts perhaps did push it too far trying to get a response from Bob.

Whatever your stance on the issue, it does feel like anti-gay supporters are now being victimised by pro-gay supporters of late within the media.

Clearly Katter is very conservative and always will be, so why keep asking him the question we already know the answer to?

  15. It’s actually frightening and distressing the amount of rage and ignorance the man spills out regarding a straight forward question.

The reason why probably only one person has raised this point with him in the past is probably due to his supporters being as small minded as him.

But then again… his legacy will always be as rogue, lunatic politician.

  16. That interview just proves what a bigot this man is. I don’t understand how he can be for “equality” of one group and not another. Equality is for every Australian citizen. He can’t just pick and choose who he thinks should have equal rights.
I don’t usually watch The Circle, but the Producer behind that segment should be up for a Logie. The timing and order of the questions they asked him were spot on.
