Spartacus to end with next season

Spartacus: War Of The Damned will be the last chapter in the gladiator series, filmed in New Zealand.

Spartacus‘ next season will also be its last.

Spartacus: War Of The Damned is currently being filmed in New Zealand and takes place following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber.

Returning cast members include Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), Manu Bennett (Crixus), Dustin Clare (Gannicus), Dan Feuerriegel (Agron), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia) and Ellen Hollman (Saxa) joined by Todd Lasance as Gaius Julius Caesar, Simon Merrells as Marcus Crassus and Anna Hutchison as Laeta.

“It was an extremely difficult and emotional decision for my partners and I,” series creator/executive producer Steven S. DeKnight said. “Yet, in the end, the story was best served by rolling all of the remaining action and drama of Spartacus’ journey into one stunningly epic season that will be extremely satisfying for everyone who’s been along for the ride.”

The Starz series starred Aussie actor Andy Whitmore but was forced to create an off-shoot series Spartacus: Blood and Sand with Dustin Clare, before McIntyre was re-cast as Spartacus for the official second season, Spartacus: Vengeance.

The gladiator series is currently airing in Australia on GO!

I think it’s to do with the story.

The whole arena stuff. Was really free reign to do whatever they wanted with in that environment.

Once they’re out, they literally walk around, fight battles, grow in number and travel around Italy having the odd battle with Romans.

I guess, try thinking of ways to make that interesting for the long run.

I thought the new guy was good. I think the problem is, there was nothing to do with his story besides give speeches and fighting. Not him. Also it was just a change.

I think I was less emotionally vested in the last series, but damn some of it was better than anything in the first two seasons.

The whole rescue mission from the mines. The attack on the Arena. The battle that has the fire balls. Sorry trying to be a bit vague. That stuff was just epic for TV.

  2. I’m okay with the show ending on a third season. Season 2 didn’t wow me like Season 1 and GoTA (which I bought the Blu-rays of). The re-casting of Spartacus himself was a disappointment, and either going outside the ludus and arenas dulled the drama or the scripts just weren’t as good. It was good while it lasted.

  3. I would have liked 2 more seasons.

I just hope they really jam pack the last season with zero filler.

I thought the most recent season was great. I especially liked how everything was improved. The fighting, the effects, the look ect.

It had some truly.. wow never seen anything like that on TV before moments. I think Game of Thrones could learn something from the Spartacus action team and be better for it.

Now I can understand that the Third Servile War may actually get redundant in plots. So maybe dragging it out would just lead to contrived plots.

I think clearly though, this is a money issue. The show has done nothing but approve in ratings and acclaim.

The next season starts with Spartacus and an Army of 30,000. So sustaining that scale on TV, would get very expensive.

I do just hope it’s more a plot reason than that though.

  4. I agree with Brekkie – the right call. I’m not sure season 3 really wowed anyone and arrogantly assuming that you’d get 6 would be wrong. For me season 3 was solid enough, but it badly needs some likeable characters. Spartacus has turned into a real brooding fella, and none of the other gladiators are really compelling actors. John Hannah as Batiatus, and Lucy Lawless too, were the show’s main strength IMHO.

  5. The right decision – we all know how it ends and this season didn’t really have any big climax to aim for with each episode being basically fighting amongst themselves then killing a few Romans.

Better they end it now rather than milk it an extra two or three series – or get axed before it reaches it’s natural conclusion.

  6. Jupiter’s [Rooster]! That is terrible news.

DeKnight originally envisioned Spartacus spanning five to six seasons and now we will only have three seasons (plus the prequel)? There is a lot of story to cover in just ten episodes.

The drama between Spartacus and Crixus would be enough to sustain another season just by itself, without the various battles with Romans. And they haven’t even introduced the other leader of the rebellion yet – unless Agron’s “real name” is going to be revealed to be Castus.
