If Kirani James (Grenada) repeats his world championship triumph in the men’s 400m, he will win his country’s first Olympic medal.And keep an eye on Alana Boyd in the women’s pole vault. Alana is the offspring of two Olympians – her father Ray competed in the pole vault in 1982, while mother Denise competed in the 200m in 1978. But the big one to watch out for is glamour girl Elena Isinbaera from Russia. She has won the last two gold medals in the women’s pole vault, but has been troubled by injury earlier this year. Can she make it three in a row?

The Boomers take on a Russian team that have fallen down the basketball ladder in recent years, but beware of the slumbering bear. This is a crucial game for the Aussies – if they lose, they will have to face the might of the USA in the knockout stage.

Laser: Tom Slingsby (medal race)
The second day of sailing medal races should see reigning world champion Tom Slingsby poised to win a gold medal in the men’s Laser. He will be desperate to put the disappointment of Beijing behind him. At present, Tom is far enough ahead to guarantede a silver medal minimum. All he needs to do is finish within six spots of Cypress sailor Pavlos Kontides and he will win the Gold.

Men’s 50m rifle 3 positions: Dane Sampson (qualification> final)
Men’s trap: Michael Diamond, Adam Vella (qualification>final)
Can Michael Diamond reclaim the gold medal he won in the men’s trap in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000? London is the 40-year-old shooter’s sixth consecutive Games. Diamond is one of three Australian gold medallists’ shooters from previous Games in London.

Jumping: Julia Hargreaves, James Paterson-Robinson, Edwina Tops-Alexander, Matthew Williams (round 2) Greenwich Park stages the team show jumping final in the afternoon. Australia’s riders will be chasing our first medal in jumping, but they’ll face a stiff challenge from two-time defending champions USA
