ASTRA graduate program

ASTRA has announced its third annual Graduate Program, with ten placements with Pay TV channels.

Pay TV body ASTRA has announced its third annual ASTRA Graduate Program, with three-month contracts for graduates of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) Foundation Diploma to work with STV organisations in 2013.

Ten positions will be hosted by FOX Sports Australia, Foxtel, BBC Worldwide Australia, TVSN & Expo Channel, Disney Channels, TV1 & SF, STUDIO & World Movies and Aurora Community Channel.

“We are pleased to continue the program in 2013, as it underscores STV’s commitment to investing in and nurturing talent. The program has shown that pairing skilled graduates with STV organisations is mutually beneficial and provides a pathway to future opportunities,” said Petra Buchanan, CEO of ASTRA.

The STV industry employs 7,410 people and invests over $578.4 million into the production of Australian content.

Sandra Levy, CEO of AFTRS said, “The ASTRA Graduate program has a strong reputation and is something that graduates of the Foundation Diploma look forward to participating in. ASTRA and the STV industry are providing a rare opportunity for training and professional work experience that is invaluable in jump-starting a career in film and television.”

The Program is the only one of its kind for AFTRS, and is unique in the television industry in that it offers structured, short-term employment opportunities to recent graduates. The roles encompass a variety of tasks in the areas of production, promotion, programming, marketing and broadcasting.

Kate Heffernan, Head of People and Culture for FOX Sports Australia said, “We are pleased to participate in the ASTRA Graduate Program for a third year. The program has been a resource for us to find and train new talent, as well as another way we can be part of subscription television’s contribution to the media landscape in Australia.”
