  1. Parenthood – I would say is one of the few family based drama’s currently on TV that is not crime or medical based. Just a shame it’s so under rated here and in the US, Seven hasn’t even bothered bringing it back this season yet. Word is it will end its 4th season (15 eps) in late January. So it will likely be over before Seven even starts it again.

Yes I posted about Parenthood, big shock!

  2. Seems that television these days comprises shows about doctors, cops, lawyers or comedy. Just because a show fits one those genres does not make it a rating success… hence Emily meets her shark. The major channels are now so locked into that formula that they see no way out. When something original does come along, Sons of Anarchy and Deadwood to name but two, they’re buried on the peripheral channels… not that I mind per se.

Oh, and fast tracking is not necessarily a panacea. If you fast track crap, it’s still… well, you know what I mean. And if it’s a decent show the interwebz are going to beat fast tracking hands down.

Tough times ahead for FTA television.

    1. Issue based drama is nearly always police / crime, law and medical and with very good reason too, specifically tied to story generation and budgets. Deadwood fits the police genre, it just happens to be western / period police. Sons of Anarchy fits crime. Adult Melodrama (ie. Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters) differs, but isn’t issue-based drama. So it’s not television “these days” it’s television full stop. There’s actually more bending of the genres these days than there was 30 years ago.

  3. If “Fast-tracking” is so great then why has nobody been able to provide any evidence?

And what to the Foxtel, The ABC and Ten have to gain by bleating “Fast-tracking good” over and over until people unquestioningly believe it?

  4. The first thing you need is a show that your audience actually wants to watch.

Not that it is really relevant to Emily Owens MD because it is both a poor quality Grey’s Anatomy clone and not even a popular one. It is on because Ten have nothing better and it will axed soon.

Vegas on the other hand is very popular. Nostalgic period pieces were in, Vegas is cool, detective shows are easy to churn out and people watch them and Americans always love a tough lone wolf cowboy. So they made a drama about a lone wolf cowboy detective in 1960s Las Vegas and the people loved it! That is people over 55 – it has the worst youth demographics you have ever seen. The idea that Ten’s audience would stay up and watch in on a Sunday night was pretty silly.

Ten could have promoted and “Fast Tracked” those shows as much as liked, it was never going to make one iota of difference. They are on because Ten has them, they aren’t worth much, and they will be worth even less later.

  5. What did TEN expect, I still can’t remember seeing any promotion for Emily Owens MD. Fast tracking is a good thing but you still need promotion, especially for a new she. Besides its not doing very good in the US and is likely to be canceled anyway. It’s the risk of fast tracking!

  6. 10 is crazy to allow just their own program person to chose the shows .They should put together a viewers panel of say 100 people & preview their new shows to sort out the best chances. Then they should show the first episode ad free .Then repeat the early eps on their second channel 3 times to spread out the opportunity to watch .Then set up web sites for fans . Once established they should show eps at the same time/day .The BBC do the best promos & scheduling with 30 day free downloads , as well to promote interest from their web site.Homeland series 1 should have been shown as a lead up to S2 , as well as the Israeli original to promote interest . Then they should have a short intro about USA politics & about the background of the CIA in domestic politics .This backstory is vital to the storyline but most Aussies are not aware of this sensitive issue in the USA.
