Formal Wars series for Seven

Seven is preparing a Brideszillas-style fly-on-the-wall series for 2013.

In August I wrote about auditions for Formal Affairs, Matchbox Pictures new series about the world of school formals for an unnamed network.

Today the Daily Telegraph notes that Formal Wars will screen on Seven as “a Brideszillas-style cringefest for those left to be dressed by their less than fashionable folks, while turning the spotlight on the current trends in this booming $3 billion events business.”

Borrowing heavily (perhaps?) from Don’t Tell the Bride, it sees parents hijack their daughter’s formal, deciding on everything from her dress to her date.

Seven’s head of production, Brad Lyons said: “The school formal is rapidly becoming the biggest day in a teenager’s life, so the reactions when we tell them their parents are in control have been priceless.”

Filming is currently underway on Channel Seven’s new fly-on-the-wall reality series Formal Wars, set to premiere in 2013.

High school graduates are now celebrating the end of their school days in an industry estimated to be worth $3 billion a year. But this once-in-a-lifetime experience will be turned on its head for the girls in Formal Wars. It’ll be every young woman’s worst nightmare when their school formal is hijacked by their parents.

In a radical experiment of generational trust, mums and dads, daughters and sons will put their faith in each other as their parents choose everything from the dress to their date, hair, make-up and arrival. Do their parents know them well enough to ensure a great night? Or will they embarrass them in front of all their friends on the biggest night of their life?

“Exploring the relationship between teenagers and parents is fascinating. And with the school formal rapidly becoming the biggest day in a teenager’s life, the reactions when we tell them their parents are in control have been priceless,” says Seven’s Director of Network Production Brad Lyons.

Tension is high and politeness is pushed to the limit, but at its core Formal Wars is a touching series about parents and teenagers at one of the most important times of their relationship.

Formal Wars is an original format by Matchbox Pictures for Channel Seven.

  1. Oh 7 what are you doing. You have done well in the past with quality shows dont go down this path.

Mind you it would be interesting to see what mothers pick for there daughters. But its just like dont tell the bride where someone picks out there dress for them.
