NITV joins SBS from 12 / 12 / 12

National Indigenous Television will begin broadcasting on SBS4 from December 12, with a two-hour outdoor Live broadcast from Uluru.

National Indigenous Television will begin broadcasting on SBS from 12pm (AEDT) 12 December 2012, starting with Heart of Our Nation, a two-hour outdoor Live broadcast from Uluru.

The channel, which has previously been available in regional areas and through Subscription TV, will air on digital spectrum SBS4.

SBS Managing Director, Michael Ebeid, said: “The 12th of December marks an important milestone in Australian broadcasting, and in our nation’s history. SBS is incredibly proud to be playing a role in delivering content about Indigenous Australians, produced by Indigenous Australians, to every Australian household. With NITV part of the SBS family, we will reflect Australia’s diversity in a way no other broadcaster has before.”

NITV Channel Manager, Tanya Denning, said: “NITV has been creating and delivering innovative content representing the many voices of the country’s first Australians. We remain dedicated to having our unique languages and culture reflected within the media landscape, and we’re excited to invite Australians of all backgrounds to tune in, and join us in celebrating our rich and unique culture.”

Other programming highlights on 12 December include a Living Black special, a special edition of NITV News and a sunset concert featuring Jessica Mauboy, Christine Anu, Casey Donovan and Troy Cassar Daley.

  1. I welcome NITV back on the air. I last got to see it when it was part of Digital 44 in Sydney.

Hopefully SBS will help bring it up to the standard of the excellent Maori TV in New Zealand.

  2. Gee, a genuine community station on the digital narrowcast channel. SBS playing by the rules instead of exploiting a loophole and broadcasting home shopping like the commercial stations.

  3. I’m surprised SBS is doing this to be honest, I thought that SBS Two might have shifted to using the HD spectrum, given the fact they have ~3-4mbps less than the other networks because of the way their signal is configured

  4. I think this means SBS is using the digital bandwidth for NITV similar to how 7,9 and 10 have 4ME, eXtra and TVSN. I wonder how many people watch these shopping channels?.
