What’s this? Incoming TEN exec Russel Howcroft and sacked TEN presenter Helen Kapalos rubbing shoulders in New York?

It’s all a very curious situation, as snapped by The Age.

According to the article, Howcroft crashed her lunch with CBS news executive, Bill Mondora.

It continues:

Witnesses say Howcroft, who wore jeans to the meeting, asked Mondora and Kapalos for “tips on how to run the station” and advice on engaging viewers through social media.

Sources say that there is no animosity between Howcroft and Kapalos because he was not involved in the decision to sack her, yet his presence at the lunch is unusual.

The Age has since updated with a response from TEN:

However, a spokesman for Network Ten said the reported conversation between Howcroft and Mondora was “simply incorrect” and the lunch was set up about six weeks ago.

“Russel is holidaying in New York and took the opportunity to catch up with Bill Mondora and Helen Kapalos … this was organised weeks ago,” the spokesman said.

Howcroft takes over TEN’s Melbourne management in January.

  2. Sounds to me like Helen had holidays booked in New York for a while. She would have been taking them now and been back on the desk while Mal took a break during Dec/January. Ten has a close Association with CBS so a meeting would have been set up a while back. Ten were about to sack staff around the country and have them finish on Nov 30. Obviously Ten had to let Helen know her services would not be required after Nov 30 and hence had to tell her on her last day before her holiday. The shameful thing is ten did not give her the dignity to say goodbye to her viewers on air like most news presenters do…..and many will do on Nov 30 around the country. Ten’s going to be a much quieter place come Dec 3.

  3. The words Ten and management are hard to combine in the same sentance, at least with any conviction, given the slippery slope of poor judgenent calls of late.

    If one were to think the worst of the Helen Kapalos saga, especially the text book security and access restrictions imposed virtually immediately, after all, has the ever present Ten spokesperson, explained exactly what is Helen’s current contract situation?…. As I thought her contract does not expire till early next year?, and now this mystery spokesperson is seemingly responding for both Helen and Russel and seems well informed with the events leading up to this meeting, and what transpired during that meeting?

    It seems Ten Melbourne operations,. may have have a laid back exec.headed their way, given Russel wore jeans to a meeting organised weeks ahead, but then again this seems to be in keeping with the attitude of Ten’s current exec’s?

    Nor should we ever forget, there is always at least two sides to every story?

  4. You know what I have found curious over the last few days, that Helen Kapalos was taking a Holiday in New York and gets sacked the night they start and then is meeting with a CBS news executive shortly after.

    Could there be more to the story of TEN not going to re-sign Helen and why they locked her out of her computer or is this all just one huge coincidence that Helen was going to be in New York and she took a chance while there.

    Or maybe I should just put my tin-foil hat on now (note I was originally annoyed at TEN for getting rid of Helen).
