ASC Media Awards: winners

FOX Sports, SBS  and ABC were awarded at the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Media Awards last week, recognising sports journalism, broadcasting and photography.

SBS’s digital coverage of the 2012 Tour de France was recognised with the inaugural award for Best Coverage of Sport through Digital Media. SBS journalist Luke Waters received the award for Best Depiction of the Value of Sport to Australians in a Community Setting for his story Race Game.

“SBS is a leader of digital sports coverage, delivering true multi-platform experiences that bring greater value to our audiences. This award is well-deserved recognition of the success of our digital coverage of the Tour de France and the great team we have working at SBS,” said Ken Shipp, Head of Sport at SBS.

Luke Waters’ story Race Game used three separate case studies to demonstrate the inclusive power of sport in the context of multiculturalism. These included a Sudanese refugee using cricket as a means of integrating and excelling, an Aboriginal footballer whose own career failed due to an illicit drug habit but who now coaches promising youngsters and the goodwill generated in an Australia Day cricket match between the Greek and Sri Lankan communities.

“This is the second consecutive year that Luke has been recognised at the ASC Media Awards, which is testament to Luke’s excellence as a journalist. On behalf of all his colleagues at SBS, we congratulate Luke on his win,” said Paul Cutler, Director of News and Current Affairs at SBS.

This year’s ASC Media Awards winners included:

· Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Sports Journalism Peter Wilkins, ABC

· Best Coverage of Sport by an Organisation — Broadcast Media Fox Sports

· Best Coverage of Sport by an Individual — Broadcast Media Gerard Whateley, ABC and Fox Sports

· Best Profiling of an Athlete, Team or Coach — Broadcast Media Fox Sports

· Best Depiction of the Value of Sport to Australians in a Community Setting Luke Water, SBS

· Best Coverage of Sport through Digital Media SBS, 2012 Tour de France
