Airdate: Last Chance to See Cuba

Adventurer Simon Reeve heads to Cuba, ahead of major reform by the island communist country.

2013-01-06_1857Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve, who previously fronted a travel series across the Indian Ocean, now heads to Cuba to find a communist country in the middle of a capitalist revolution.

Last Chance to See Cuba begins on SBS later this month.

Two years ago, Cuba announced the most sweeping and radical economic reforms the country has seen in decades. From ending state rationing to cutting one million public-sector jobs, one of the last communist bastions in the world has begun rolling back the state on an unprecedented scale.

Simon meets ordinary Cubans whose lives are being transformed, from the owners of fledgling businesses to the newly rich estate agents selling properties worth over one million dollars.

Simon discovers the impact these extensive reforms are having on a country that has lived hand-to-mouth for half a century. More importantly, he examines what reducing the state really means to a nation that has been both dominated and supported by it for three generations.

Over the next couple of years, Cuba will change considerably and Simon is taking one last chance to reflect on this island nation’s history and what the reforms will mean for their future.

Wednesday, 23rd January at 8.30pm on SBS ONE.
