The Paradise: a heady world of desires, dreams and ambition, and the most luxurious selection of goods you’ll ever find, all under one roof. Set amidst the Victorian splendour of Britain’s first department store, The Paradise is a rags-to-riches story of a young girl who falls in love with the intoxicating charms of the modern world.

As Denise finds her feet as a shop girl in the Ladies wear department of The Paradise, she must navigate her way through the shop floor power struggles, the intrigues and the affairs. She is young, ambitious and knows she has the ability to rise to dizzying heights.

Meanwhile, the shop’s dashing and reckless owner, John Moray, spots Denise almost as soon as she’s set foot on the shop floor. Self-made and utterly modern, Moray can be ruthless – and completely charming. In Denise he sees some of himself, and can’t help being drawn to her, despite being entangled with his powerful financier’s pampered and determined daughter, Katherine Glendenning.

This is a love story, a story of ambition and progress, and a mysterious dark secret threatening to ruin a hard-won empire. Inspired by Emile Zola’s much loved novel ‘Au Bonheur des Dames’, this glamorous series revolves around the lives of the people who live and work in the store; each is bound in their own way by the power of the world they live in, and the pasts that follow them here.

7:30pm Saturday, 2 February ABC1.
