2013-01-31_1256It’s official. How I Met Your Mother has now been renewed by CBS and 20th Century Fox TV. Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan are all returning.

Conformation of a ninth and final season comes after unofficial reports of a renewal emerged in December.

Writers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have always said that they’d need a year’s notice to properly tie up their loose ends.

“We’re writing this season like it’s the end,” Thomas said at the start of the current season. “We’ll have to have a Plan A and a Plan B going, and we’re approaching the moment where those plans diverge.”

CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said, “Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catchphrases.

“We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”

The current series is averaging 10 million viewers in the US and airs Mondays on Seven.

  1. I remember watching this in its first year, and can’t believe it’s still going and unresolved – and probably has nothing to do with its original premise (and title, which I’m presuming is somewhat misleading now)

  2. From interviews i’d read with the guys that created and run it, they really weren’t too sure if they’d actually introduced the mother as a character or have it ending with them meeting.

They’re gearing up pretty hard for it though. Seeing we now know how he ended up meeting her.

  3. Channel 7 are showing Season 8. The one where they promised there wouldn’t be anymore gimmicks like false foreshadowing of thing in future time, teasing the audience etc. after that annoyed fans in Season 7.

Of course S8 started with an episode that continues to jump backwards and forwards in time and showed Ted’s future wife as an unknown women with a yellow umbrella he yet again just missed meeting.

And of course now we know nothing is going to happen for the next two season till the end of S9.

  4. I hope the mother is revealed at the end of this current season.
I think long time fans deserve some time getting to know the mother that’s been hyped up for 8 seasons!!

  5. Love this show but am glad it is finally coming to an end. The first episode of season nine was on Seven on Monday and you could tell that they were gearing up to finally reveal the mum, but atleast now they won’t have to rush it all into one season given it’s taken them 8 seasons to get to it! I wish Australia would give sitcoms a chance as they obviously make for great ratings (Big Bang and Modern Family are some of the biggest rated shows on Nine and TEN respectfully), but the only sitcoms to have been made in the 21st century is Kath & Kim and Wilfred (not exactly highlighting the best Australia has to offer). Anyone else agree or is it just me?
