Black Caviar makes her return to the track on Saturday, her first race since Royal Ascot.

2013-02-14_1200Black Caviar makes her return to the track on Saturday, her first race since Royal Ascot.

A race named in her honour, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes will take place at Flemington.

“She’s an Australian sporting icon rivalling Bradman and Phar Lap and we can’t wait to showcase this Australian sporting phenomenon once again as she aims to continue her undefeated run to 23 races,” said Seven’s Head of Sport Saul Shtein.

Hosted by Hamish McLachlan with expert commentary from former champion jockey and winner of 15 Group 1 races Simon Marshall coverage of the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes continues the new broadcast rights agreement announced in January in which Seven will telecast all major Australian horse racing live on Channel 7 or 7TWO.

Throughout the year Seven will broadcast the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Sydney Racing Carnival including the Golden Slipper, and the Spring Racing Carnival including the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate in Melbourne.

Seven’s Horse Racing starts from 2pm AEDT on 7TWO.

  1. When will you doubters get over the fact that Black Caviar is a sprinter. She will never run a long race so just get over yourselves.

I like the Usain Bolt analogy user 🙂 I doubt it will shut the doubters up though.

  2. Well, the races against Hay List and Buffering have been at WFA. Of course they’ll be giving her a couple of kilos.

But she was topweight in the Newmarket, (carrying 58 giving a minimum of 3kg to the nearest runner) and in the Goodwood, carrying 57.

  3. I think to be considered in the first rank of great horses and compared to Phar Lap,yeah you got to excel at longer distances. The Triple Crown..racing’s sternest examination of 3 year olds, has a shortest distance of 1 3/16…way farther than bc seems capable of going.Even as a sprinter nonpareil,Black Caviar has usually raced at a 2 kg advantage over Hay List and Buffering. My biggest disappointment…and this is with the trainer, not the horse…is the non compete at the Breeders Cup,where the world’s best go at each other.Like I said,Moody has been careful in placing her…to the detriment of racing fans, who’d have liked to seen more of her. But,I grant,it’s not uncommon in the sport, and I’m looking forward to Saturday.(race is 1000m I think, really short.)

  4. I agree Bruce would be so much better than Hamish.

As for those bemoaning Black Caviar’s competition – well, she’s beaten everyone who has turned up.

If she’s a sprinter – she’s a sprinter. No need to prove herself over a mile, or try to win the Cox Plate.

She’s set the race record in the Newmarket, and run the fastest furlong in Australian history in last year’s Lightning Stakes.

She’s beaten Hay List and Buffering at every chance – Hay List has won 3 Group 1s; and Buffering (four Group 2s). I don’t think she’s (or Moody on her behalf) is dodging anyone.

    Go you good thing!

  5. Gotta say, I agree with nicks. Her career has been micro-managed entirely to artificially continue the winning streak. It’s still impressive but nothing like taking on all challengers and defeating them.

Potential race distances are more restricted for sprinters. She raced over 1,400m last Feb but I would like to see her test herself over 1600m.

  6. Peter Moody has picked her spots pretty well.I wish he wasn’t so hidebound to have her retire undefeated, and would have raced her against some better horses at longer distances,so we could really see how good this remarkable horse might be.I’ll watch, but Black Caviar is a sprinter.. has raced only once over 1200m..Phar Lap raced from 5 1/2 f to 2 1/4 miles..no comparison.
