First Idol…. now a Popstars revival?

Before Australian Idol there was Popstars. But do we really need it back?

2013-02-20_0036Say it isn’t so…

News Limited is speculating that Popstars could be headed for a revival.

The talk stems from Kyle Sandilands telling radio listeners about a possible new television role.

“Popstars has been mentioned, but a different version of it,” he said.

“Popstars was the first of them all, before Idol, before all of these things.”

It’s true that Popstars was a phenomenon when it assembled Bardot. The Screentime-produced series, which began in NZ, has gone on around the world as a true international brand.

Subsequent seasons with Scandal’us (including Sandilands’ former wife Tamara Jaber) and Scott Cain and Kayne Taylor (Popstars Live) were pale successors.

While TEN is talking about reviving Australian Idol, it’s hard to know where Popstars would fit in. Even Foxtel has ruled it out -and I doubt ABC or SBS are looking to get on board.

  1. What the heck? Yeah it was the first, but 7 isn’t going to start this up again when they have X Factor now, and why would another channel take it?

Also the last time they did have it on, it was 7 trying to cash in on Australian Idol, with Popstars Live. The experiement didnt turn out so well and so it seemed to be the last. Funnily enough Luke Jacobz was the host, and his hosting duties have been improved since hosting X Factor.

  2. It was good in its day but it will go the same way as Hey Hey and YTT. There is no room for Idol either as the marketplace is too crowded. I think AGT will also struggle on Nine due to the talent supply having been exhausted.

  3. Bring it back I say, it was the first of these types of talent shows and wasn’t all shiny floor, bells and whistles. Not sure about Kyle though, he’s generally a huge turn-off for most people with an IQ in double digits
