SBS TWO to refresh

What does SBS have in store for a new-look SBS TWO?

2013-02-07_1156What does SBS have in store for SBS TWO?

We’ll know later this month.

SBS is planning a new coat of paint to SBS TWO, which has previously been tipped to take a more youthful approach (although that’s purely speculative).

So far the channel is a mix of daytime news bulletins, foreign language content, movies, catch-up and even sport. Its ratings tend to sit just ahead of ABC News 24 and ABC3.

In the Multichannel Survey that TV Tonight ran in November, SBS indicated the following responses:

BRAND IDENTITY:
Documentary, sport, food, entertainment, world cinema/ film (mostly in language), drama

TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC:
Men and women 40+

So what direction would you like to see SBS TWO take?

  1. Reality shows from other countries. SBS already has quite a few in their arsenal, and they wouldn’t need to buy too many more to fill an 18-hour day if they still want WeatherWatch for overnights.

Definitely some other versions of The Amazing Race are a must – Asia most obviously, but the French and Chinese versions are pretty good too from what I can tell – but I’d also suggest some international Survivor seasons and the (incredible) Dutch version of The Mole at the very least.

  2. Currently, on Mondays at SBS2, they have first run of ‘The World Game’ program. They could have a ”sports night” sort of theme on that night to boost the ratings share. Just wishful thinking though, as a sports nut. lol

  3. Like a few others have noted I’d like to see more East Asian content. Currently on Fridays SBS TWO are screening Jackie Chan and Jet Li films. Some of these are absolute classics of the HK Action genre so hopefully they’ll screen more throughout the year.

  4. I don’t understand why SBS don’t enclave their foreign news services (which are great) onto SBS3 (perhaps even 24/7) and free up both 1 & 2 to provide daytime entertainment for the rest of us. Their programming across all their platforms (including NITV) is fantastic, innovative and genuinely alternative. Why oh why oh why can’t we have more? (PS I’m Anglo)

  5. I hope they don’t take away their documentaries. I love those. Although could you emphasise the “SBS” rather than the “Two” . The watermark is alright so don’t change it: even though I’m no fan of such things.

  6. What? That TWO in orange is exactly like 7TWO in orange. Their SBS ONE is lready too similar with the other One. SBS need to focus more on the SBS brand and less on highlighting the numbers.

  7. I think SBS needs to stop competing with ABC and the other networks for English-language material and refocus on bringing us the best of the non-speaking world’s television – so more drama and general entertainment foreign-language content on SBS2 would be welcome. Even reality shows like Come Dine With Me Greece which was a fun show to watch.

There is so much TV produced in other countries not in English that we are just oblivious to… and after all that was part of the reason SBS was set up in the first place. If they want to turn SBS1 into a quasi-ABC then at least turn SBS2 into a truly multicultural service.

And of course more Eurovision material is welcomed!

  8. Definitely would like to see more quality drama and comedy in languages other than English.

Even if Homeland never existed, Prisoners of War is a great show in its own right. I’m sure there’s heaps of excellent material out there that we’re missing out on.

And just as ABC2 is more edgier and quirky than ABC1, it would be nice to see some more provocative or “colorful” programming, from all genres.

  9. can the multi channels please just pick a target audience and stick to that. I am so over shows being bumped from channel to channel.

foxtel do the same thing and it is freakin annoying.

  10. @Bella: The Amazing Race Asia is a great idea! I was actually thinking reruns of the original TAR. I know that there a a few international TARs, it would be nice to get at least the English language countries seasons, and the non-English if subtitles are available.

  11. Please, no more food, shallow travelogues, or twats pretending to be heroes by intentionally putting themselves in danger. Nothing that’s ever been on National Geographic or Discovery.

I would be happy to see more shows and movies from Asia (esp Hong Kong and S. Korea), Europe, and S. America.

  12. I wouldn’t mind SBS Two going the World Movies route.

And I don’t mind @nicks’ idea of travel related programs.

And an English-language news service wouldn’t go astray either – obviously at times not already covered by SBS One.

  13. Foreign movies, docs, travel related programs..could be foodcentric,or pure adventure like Tropic of Cancer or Bruce Parry’s Arctic.Comedy(or what passes for it here in oz )will fail.I’d expand programming related to Eurovision..it’s turned into a pretty good franchise..might as well wring it for all it’s worth.I wouldn’t mind following Julia Zemiro around Europe for a couple of weeks worth of shows.
