Emma Booth (Underbelly, Cloudstreet, Jack Irish) and Chris Egan (Home and Away, Kings) have both been cast in the US drama pilot Gothica for the ABC Network.
Set in the present day, project weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.
It centres on journalist Grace Van Helsing (Janet Montgomery) who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper with Reaper creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas serving as executive producers/showrunners alongside creator/executive producer Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice).
In this incarnation Frankenstein runs a hospital that also does biotech research and believes that he may have a way to bring his recently deceased daughter back to life.
Emma Booth plays Victor Frankenstein’s (Tom Ellis) wife Madeline Usher while Egan is wealthy playboy, Dorian Gray.
The ABC pilot is not to be confused with Showtime’s straight-to-series show Penny Dreadful, which will bring together literary horror characters including Dracula, Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray in turn-of-the-century Victorian London.
