Meet The Young Americans: Gay In The US

Yikes. ABC2 screens a documentary on 'Gay Conversion Therapy' in America.

2013-03-07_0036On Monday night ABC2 screens Meet The Young Americans: Gay In The US, a documentary on ‘Gay Conversion Therapy.’

Do not attempt this at home…

Despite opposition from mental health organisations, there are licensed therapists across the United States offering a controversial type of therapy which claims to turn gay people straight.

Presenter Stacey Dooley travels to the American West to meet young men taking part in ‘Gay Conversion Therapy’ to find out if it is possible to change your sexual orientation and become straight.

Along the way she meets TJ, a 19 year old, who, with encouragement from his parents, has been trying to turn himself straight for the last five years. He says he is no longer attracted to men, but the reality is he does not fancy women either.

We also meet Danny who believes ‘Gay Conversion Therapy’ has enabled him to remain married to his wife Erin for five years and have children together. Stacey spends time at their family home and tries to understand why someone would want to change who they are, and why a wife would take a chance on a man battling with his homosexuality.

Finally, deep in the northern Arizona wilderness, Stacey visits a camp for men who hope that bonding with male friends and embracing their masculinity will lead to the change they’ve been searching for.

8:35pm Monday, 11 March ABC2.

  1. Haha. This is such nonsense but I will be definitely watching.

From what I’ve seen, conversion therapy seems to consist of A) Blaming parents for their homosexuality, B) A whole bunch of homoerotic stuff, and C) The fear of God with Jesus sprinkles on top. So, it will be interesting to see what else they can come up with to fix the unbroken… unsuccessfully.

I actually feel really bad for these people, though. A 19 year old spending 5 years of his life attempting to become straight… it’s just upsetting. Whatever makes him happy, right? Even though I don’t think his asexuality would make him that much more happier. Perhaps, whatever makes his God happy, right?!

@jezza the first original one – Conversion therapy is legal here?

  2. This is quirky enough to be interesting. I do wonder how much of the “therapy” is science based and how much is just simply religious rhetoric, but it’s got my curiosity enough to want take a look.

  3. This sounds quite funny. At least America gives people the freedom to do their own thing. Somehow, I don’t think they will get too much success….
