Time to induct Peter Harvey into Logies Hall of Fame

Inducting Peter Harvey would be a fitting tribute to a fine career.

2013-03-02_2210The Logie Awards should induct Peter Harvey into the Hall of Fame.

Harvey had 38 years of bringing us news with the Nine Network, from Canberra, Sydney and across the globe.

A nation trusted his stories.

But with his passing 2013 becomes the only year in which he can be considered for the Logies Hall of Fame.

Nine News presenter Brian Naylor was inducted in 2010 following his death during the Black Saturday bushfires, after a 40 year career in television, mostly to a Melbourne audience. In 2011, Harvey’s colleague Laurie Oakes was inducted. Last year it was Molly Meldrum whilst recovering from his near-fatal accident.

There are many who deserve to be considered for the Hall of Fame. There are only three TV shows honoured and, shamefully, just one woman: Ruth Cracknell.

But given the circumstances, inducting Peter Harvey would be a fitting tribute to a fine career and Gold Logie winner Ray Martin could present it to his family.

  1. Isn’t it a pity that all too often acknowledgements like this come too late for the recipient to feel the warmth and get the glow from the glory.

We ought figure out a way to have eulogies and tributes and hall of fame inductions before the deaths, dont you think?

  2. this is just a side note – i was just checking Hall of Fame recipitants on youtube, and noticed that Jana Wendt introduced Laurie Oakes into the Hall of Fame in 2011, so i guess the Logies don’t hate her afterall

  3. He was an amazing journalist – but there are lots of amazing journalists that should be in the hall of fame. However it is time for more women in the Hall of Fame.Name the journalism award after him or start a new award for young journalists find another way to honour him. But for goodness sake start recognising the role that women have played in the television industry.

  4. Absolutely agree with the calls for the introduction of multiple inductees to the Logies Hall of Fame . I honestly think we should go a step further: and make the Hall of Fame a separate event, say the night before the Logies, in somewhere like the Regent in Melbourne, to honour the greats with not just the people flying in for the Logies attending, but the general public allowed to attend too.

As for Peter Harvey, I also absolutely agree with the calls for his induction into the Logies Hall of Fame.

  5. Peter harvey should have been inducted into the hall of fame long ago he was one of Australia’s finest jurnos and deserved a lot more recognition than what he got

  6. David

I can’t agree with you on this one.

I believe there are more worthy inductee’s into the Logie Hall Of Fame, and I’ll name one.

Mr Ray Martin is more worthy of being in the hall of fame.

But my fear is Peter Harvey will get inducted out of sheer sympathy.

  7. Totally agree. Not sure how far before the Logies they decided who to induct, and if they have already arranged for someone to be inducted this year. But definitely well deserved, and I agree, a shame not done while he was alive.

Why don’t the Logies like Jana Wendt?

  8. Wholeheartedly agree. And, yes, it would be nice if people who have contributed significantly could have their efforts recognised while they are still with us.

  9. I think the Hall of Fame need to consider adding more than one person each year. Maybe each year they add one male, one female and one program.

That way, they can recognise worthy recipients while they are still with us instead of waiting until after they have passed

  10. I wonder why many candidates are inducted following illness/death/injury. Why wasn’t Harvey considered prior to his death? Does this mean that perhaps he wasn’t worthy of the award otherwise?

  11. i do agree that Peter Harvey be a chance to get the Hall of Fame this year. Was such a great journalist.

I just wish that people be conisidered a chance to be inducted before their death (or injury) instead of after. Since 2007, Steve Irwin, Brian Naylor and Molly Meldrum have got the award (much deserving though) after sad incidents.

  12. Still only one woman? That is shameful. Liz Hayes, noni hazlehurst, or Jana wendt should get it. Although I know the logies are very anti-Jana.

Could also be a good year to give it to home&away celebrating its 25th year. It’s contributed so much to the industry.

  13. Two points i want to make:
1 Such iconic figures should be inducted whilst they are still alive and can actually receive it.
2 Induct more than one person or program each year ala Aria or Oscar or Grammy etc.
