Dear stage mums, take note…

Video: 11 year old on Britain's Got Talent sings inappropriate song and nobody seems to notice.

2013-04-16_1425Ok 11 year old Arisxandra Libantino sure can sing, but what about the song?

I’m not sure who is dumber. Mother, Britain’s Got Talent producers or the judge who says “good choice.”

Can we talk about the inappropriateness of the lyrics please?

  1. She’s 11 – she doesn’t know what she’s singing about. But that doesn’t make it right. I’m with you David! Reminds me of the dance comp video with the 8 yo’s dry humping to Single Ladies….

  2. When I was the same age as this girl, “Like A Virgin” was #1 and “She Bop” was in the Top 10 and all the girls were singing both. “Relax” had caused a scandal several months earlier (I had absolutely no idea what it was about – it was just a great song). I remember a 16 year old friend asking me if I knew what “Like A Virgin” was about and she told me that it wasn’t about sex, it was about drugs (!). Several years later, a teacher friend of mine in her 50s asked me if I knew which “Sexy” song her 5 year old students were talking about (it was either “Sexy Is The Word” by Melissa or “I Wanna Sex You Up” by Color Me Badd). Little kids these days run around singing “I’m Sexy and I Know It”. None of them has any real concept of what they’re singing about, just as this girl wouldn’t have understood the underlying sexual nature of this particular song.

  3. Hehe – the “literally” thing always reminds me of that Big Bang Theory episode where Penny’s boyfriend Zack says “I haven’t been to a comic book store in literally a million years” and Sheldon can barely control his contempt, “Literally? Literally a million years?!?!”

  4. I agree, those lyrics aren’t the most appropriate for an 11 year old, but even a talent show atheist like me must concede that little girl has a phenomenal voice and that song showcased it wonderfully. They could have chosen a different song that showed her talent off better though.

  5. Although the song is intended to refer to sex, it can also be interpreted as one night to finally be successful. In the arts not everything is black and white, it all depends on the receiver to make a choice on what it means to them. No one person looks at a piece of art and thinks the exact same thing. For this girl it is just about her success culminating (sorry couldn’t help but make a sex pun). But my god those judges are idiots – “literally lifted the roof” is like me saying “I literally jumped for joy” when I’m in a wheelchair!

  6. Totally agree with you, David. And to those excusing it with ‘she’s just a kid, she doesn’t understand what she’s singing… It’s like those Grease songs!’ ??? Ummm… That’s the whole point. The adults in the room didn’t stand up for her and say, “you might not understand the sexually charged nature of the song you are singing, pretty little girl, so we will help you choose something just as expressive, but more appropriate for you!”
Makes me cringe just watching … “.. One night only: let’s not pretend to caaaaare..” Oh dear

  7. You’d be better served looking for the image of Jesus in a piece of Kfc,as looking for meaning in a pop song.’One night only’ gets repeated 15 times in a less than 3 minute song. You think whoever wrote it had much to say?Doesn’t Justin Bieber ‘write songs’?You know..the guy who after visiting the Anne Frank site, hoped she would have been a belieber. So they all pretty much mean..There..I’ve filled 3 minutes of track time..let’s do it 8 more times and we’ll have an album..and make millions.

  8. There are worse. They had a similarly aged girl either last year or the year before perform exactly the same song and get similarly great comments. Don’t think she even made the final in the end.

  9. It was an ok song choice. Any sexual overtones would go over her head as did most things to me at that age. As someone else mentioned Grease songs are often popular with kids and they are pretty racy if you read into the lyrics. She has a great voice!

  10. Holy crap, where’s that voice come from?

@davodavo6666 – Just click on the YouTube link that comes up in the vid.

nvm, I see that David’s replaced it with a direct link.

  11. i think its fine, the language is tame and if 11yos are limited to songs that express things they can relate to there isn’t much to choose from.
I think it would be more stage mom-y to give her a Little Orphan Annie or Shirley Temple song that usually gets pedalled out in this situation.

  12. A lot of songs are about sex or drugs, kids wouldn’t normally understand the meaning. I remember at primary school kids would sing a lot of Grease songs which are quite rude but we had no idea at the time

  13. Totally inappropriate and also proves even though the girl can sing its a far from heartfelt performance because she probably doesn’t know what she’s singing about.
